In a word, I found the Washington Square Inn to be a wonderful place to stay: It is a beautiful small hotel, immaculate, and friendly. The staff were especially helpful to our needs and interests, as was the information provided in the lobby and in the room, e.g. a very helpful collection of menus of recommended nearby restaurants. (We had a great dinner at the R&G Lounge, in fact.) The happy hour was also charming: About 8-10 people were in the lounge enjoying wine and small bites, exchanging friendly conversation. We took our breakfast in the room, for which we had an extensive choice of yummy things. This is a great place to stay, a wonderful location, comfortable, and fun.

Our honeymoon couldn't have started better! There was a complimentary bottle of ice cold sparkling wine waiting for us in our room when we arrived at the Washington Square Inn after a long, long flight from Finland. That certainly made us forget our jet lag for a while!

We had a cozy (yes, tiny) room overlooking the Coit Tower and we loved it! Luckily it was only the beginning of our two week Californian honeymoon, because there was not too much room for the luggage - but enough for us! We chose the room because it was the least expensive and it turned out to be really good value. San Francisco is in general a bit pricey place to stay in.

We arrived right in time for the afternoon wine and that was also a pleasant surprise. The wines were nothing too special but it was nice to have a little snack every afternoon.

Maybe the best thing of all was the breakfast. Every night you got a form to fill out what you would choose to have for breakfast and whether you wanted to have it in your room or eat downstairs. As you might guess, we ate delicious breakfast in bed every morning...

The worst part of Washington Square Inn was having to leave it. We had had so comfortable time there! Luckily, San Francisco has so much more to offer that I'm quite sure we will be back someday - and if Washington Square Inn is still there, we would definitely stay there again! So a big thank you for all of you TripAdvisor reviewers, because without you we would never have found this wonderful place to stay in!

The North Beach location on Washington Square is perfect. My standard room was small, no room for a chair, but nicely appointed. When I bring my wife, I will upgrade to a larger room. My outside room was quiet enough; it would have been quieter if I had closed the double-paned window. I love that the windows open! They provide a great continental breakfast at a common table in the lobby.

The best thing about this hotel for us was the great neighbourhood feel the surrounding area has, so different from Union Square. There are restaurants and other eateries in abundance all nearby. They all look good quality. It made choosing where to eat very hard. The square is charming and historic Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower were excellent places to wander around. Access to other parts of the city was easy even walkable if you are so inclined and not afraid of hills. Our room wasn't that big but very comfortable, clean and practical. (We saw other rooms/suites that were very spacious if you are willing to pay the price.) Decor felt very old European but worked really well. The reception room also used for breakfast was welcoming with a view over the square over breakfast. A varied continental breakfast is pre-ordered the previous night and then delivered to you when you sit down (or you can have it in your room if you prefer). Tea and Coffee is on tap. All in all it worked for us. The staff were very helpful and friendly and available to help with carrying bags to and from the room. The Cheese and Wine was good fun - lively conversations - and cookies available as well. We enjoyed our two nights here so much we desperately wanted to extend the stay but the aeroplane wouldn't wait. We have been to other similar priced hotels in San Francisco but if we returned again this is the one we would now choose.
