“Beautiful old hotel with a few warts”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

This is such a charming place and with such a welcoming front desk that it is hard to be too harsh about a review. However, a couple of sore points have to be mentioned.
It is an old building and with limited temperature control so if it is very warm (as it was in SF this past week) you need to leave a window open and the result is a VERY loud room with street noises from early am thru late pm.
In addition, housekeeping is a little inconsistent, sometimes knocking early morning and other times not showing up until later afternoon and it seemed to us that a vacuum was always going somewhere adding to the noise problem
Morning coffee and afternoon sherry were delightful in the beautiful parlor and we loved our suite (although the bathroom door lock trapped both of us temporarily at different times) but this is a pricey location and the noise factor might be an issue for the light sleeper

We're glad to hear your were charmed by our front desk staff. Yes, the 10 days where it actually does get warm in San Francisco are all but over now... But if you visit at the same time every year we do have fans for those rare few days when the fog abates. Our lovely housekeepers are working hard to make everything clean and spiffy. Kindly note that they will prioritize service to your room for a specific time if you notify the front desk. Otherwise their first priority is to prepare rooms for new arrivals. We do send our sincere regrets for the sticky door lock. Our maintenance person will definitely take care of that. Please come back and let us know how you think things are going another time!

We, three guys on a roadtrip down the westcoast booked a room on very short notice - basically the same morning and they were very helpful and friendly. Arriving we were positively surprised about the size of the room and the very victorian yet not overkill interior.

We spent two night at the Queen Anne and the first was in a superb room overlooking a street while we had to change rooms (they told us so while we were booking) for the second night - and in exchange for having to change we got a suite! Breakfast is decent, nice waffles especially.

Location: Very good to reach everything in central SF, parking is possible via the hotel but you will find a spot on the street usually - safe and quiet at night!

Only stayed here as that was all we could find in our price bracket. Reviews were accurate so booked it. Nice surprise when we walked in as it was full of Victorian Collectables. Nice change from the bedroom factories! We had a room on the first floor and they let us have it early. The guy on reception was not as informative as the the lady that took over later on that day. He did not advise is where the breakfast room was or that they served free sherry and cookies between 4 and 6pm. Nice touch. Room was pleasant and had a real fire. Because of the age of the building it was acceptably tired. The bed was comfortable but they need new pillows as ours were a bit thin and musty. Breakfast was adequate. I would stay here again quite happily.

Room Tip: We were in 206 on the 2nd floor. I would suggest asking for one that is higher with a view.

Most people love or hate this hotel; we loved all its quirkiness. We asked for a quiet room, and the hotel delivered, although our room on the second (UK first) floor was lacking in daylight. The staff are friendly, the continental breakfast is adequate. Sherry and cookies served in the lounge area at 4 p.m. are a nice touch. It was also convenient to have a parking lot opposite the hotel (approx. USD 20/day). If we should ever return to San Francisco (unlikely), we would definitely stay at the Queen Anne again.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room

We had never stayed in a boutique hotel before and the experience was excellent. Friendly, helpful staff that directed us to some really nice things to see while in San Francisco. One of the girls working there was a native from SF and she was extremely helpful. We walked around the neighborhood at night and we felt safe to do so. The hotel was decorated exquisitely and the feel was like being at grandmas house. The elevator was even cool with a mini-chandelier, oldy time bench and a painting hanging from the wall. Very romantic setting.
- Free breakfast was good
- Free one way trip in an executive car to anywhere in SF
- Helpful and friendly staff
- Free Wi-fi and a printer for guests to use
- Charming and comfortable
- Had to pay $20/day to park -- boooo!
- Had to get ice at the front desk which was odd.
- Great price for SF
- Great location

After being greeted by a flustered but pleasant lady, we were given the key and upon opening the door to 309 found the room unkept. The furniture looked liked it came from a second hand English bric a brac shop. One bedside lamp didn't work, the walls had dirty marks on in places which looked like thick black lines and the fridge sounded like a tank on a battle field. Wi-Fi worked erratically and we were not given the password nor a welcome pack of any sort. One of the plug sockets was dangerously lose and could have come off in my wife's hand had she not been careful. After removing the endless array if decorative cushions we eventually found three (why not four?) pillows.
The bed was comfortable and I slept well, probably due to a 250 mile drive that day . In the morning the shower curtain rail fell on me as I gently pulled it back whilst trying to step out of the bath tub.
Total cost for this? $423 for the room, tax and one night's parking. You decide.
A couple of things more. Why do hotels across the globe feel it is their right to increase prices when their are conventions or World sporting events in their cities?
Oracle and The America's cup didn't help finding a room in SF when we stayed, but $423 is outrageous for what we got here.
There are plenty of other good and well priced hotels in this city, just don't come when there are events.
Finally the desk staff really couldn't give two hoots about the shower curtain rail falling on me and simply said in a heavy
Mexican accent "I shall tell housekeeping".
This hotel is NOT good value for money and is NOT that good either.
Thanks!

There were at least half a dozen decorative pillows on our bed. And only two real ones, and they were not particularly good. By itself it is not a big deal, but it is very emblematic of the way this hotel is.

I wanted to give it just two stars, but I have to give it credit for being a pretty cool place. If you want something different from plain chain hotels, The Queen Anne definitely provides that. It can be fun and, depending on your company, romantic to sit in the lobby in fancy armchairs by a lit fireplace sipping sherry wine or tea out of real teacups and imagining yourself in a completely different era. As long as you don't let that overly sweet supermarket cookie (provided with the wine) spoil the illusion. Or you can sit in your room at the fancy desk reading a book (provided) and/or glancing at the window adorned by fancy curtains.

But sooner or later you are going to need to actually use this as a hotel and hope that as such it would at least somewhat match its fairly high price tag. And that brings me back to the pillows. My eldest son was sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room and even though we booked the suite for 3 adults, there was no pillow for the sofa bed. We had to ask for it and after a while it arrived. But the worst thing of all was the mattress on that sofa bed. It was no more than 2 inches thick and appeared to consist of nothing more than springs covered with fabric. Only an 18 year old could have gotten some sleep on that. I would like someone from the management to try it.

The air in the room was very stuffy and the windows were nailed shut. We tried the A/C, but it started blowing warm air, so we turned it off. In the bathroom the only place for toiletries was a narrow space around the sink (which btw was cracked), so everything would get wet. We couldn't find any electrical outlets that were easily accessible in the bedroom, and there was only one like that in the living room. I would understand if they were really trying to preserve the 150 year old style, but the room also sported a white microwave on top of a black refrigerator. So much for style.

I missed breakfast (our youngest was sleeping in), but my husband went. He said that 30 minutes before closing they were already all out of fruit. He brought us a couple of bagels and they did not appear very fresh. I wanted to have some tea, which is always available in the lobby, but all they had was flavored tea. I asked at the front desk and the guy told me that they don't have any other. Again, it is not that big of a deal, but I found that too quite emblematic.
