“Good hotel but expensive for sleep quality and breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2011

The hotel is really lovely, really old fashioned which is great and on arriving in our room we were very happy with the size and cleanliness.
The only main problem that we had was the noise as we were on the roadside and it was very busy all the time. Sleep therefore was not great but San Francisco makes up for this, it's wonderful.
The breakfast was also very basic, we had it included in the rate so wanted to make the most of it but it wasn't very generous, you had cereal or toast and a hot drink pretty much.
Lovely hotel but I do feel there could be better deals out there.

Room Tip: Perhaps one nearer the back

The Nob Hill Inn is definitely the place to be if you're looking for character in this amazing city. The employees are extremely helpful and happy, and the rooms are quite clean. One thing to note is that the building is very old, so we definitely noticed a bit of a musty smell upon arrival, however once your nose gets used to it, it's okay.
The location is great for those who are interested in checking out the wharf or pier 39, and there is easy access to a cable car line. The hotel is also within walking distance of several corner stores, small restaurants, and there is a Whole Foods nearby as well.
My only complaint is that because the building is so old, there is little to no soundproofing. Unfortunately we were in a room with large windows facing a very steep hill, and all day and night we were subject to terribly noisy street noises. Keeping the windows shut did not help to muffle the sound, so I suggest you pack your day full of exciting stuff so that you're bone tired when you return.
Overall I really felt that this hotel was a great addition to my trip, it added comfort and character with charming furniture, claw foot tub, and friendly employees.
Please note that if you see pictures of the rooms, the fireplaces do not work as they are not up to fire code.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms with windows facing the hill.

If you are looking for a shiny glitzy hotel, this is not it. Lots of Victorian charm, wood panelling, period furniture, friendly staff and a basic but OK breakfast is what you get here.

I had stayed at the Nob Hill Inn a couple years before while at a conference and couldn't wait to take my husband back. I love this quaint boutique hotel. It is the perfect location...close to several cable car lines...one block "up" to Grace Cathedral and a cable car ride down to China Town. Delightful. The staff is so pleasant and helpful. Both visits were perfect. The rooms are small but more than adequate with delightful views of the hills of the city. Next time in San Francisco, will take us to the same place. Why go anywhere else when the Nob Hill Inn has it all. Even the price was right.

The rooms are cute and nice, like a hotel from a bygone era. The suite had complete amenities like a kitchen and a stove top, beautiful bathroom with bathtub. Though still a bit expensive at $245/night. The location is at the nobility hills so it is quiet and relatively safe, though hard to find a parking as well as commute to and from the city if you don't have a car of your own as they don't have shuttle service. Their elevator works fine but strangely, it doesn't service all rooms. so you have to lug your bags up a long flight of stairs to get to the suite. That I can tolerate. What takes the cake though is the lousy service and rude assistant managers. Courtesy and politeness is very important to me. It started with breakfast, you can only choose up to 2, cereal/bagel/and/or muffin. My 4y.o. had a small bowl of cereal. Charge: $8.99. comes with a free smirk/smile. No guests AT ALL allowed up your room at ANY time of the day. They are to wait in the lobby even if they're a family member. Draco could not even get up from his desk to speak with guests properly. Malena, on the other hand, was a sweet and kind lady who understood and was very sweet about it. Overall, a smudge on an otherwise beautiful vacation/wedding. checked out after two nights, supposed to have reserved for a week. Good riddance.

I am very sorry that you felt that the staff treated you in an unprofessional manner. I have addressed this issue and can assure you that with proper and on going training these instances would be handled differently. I must add an explanation on why your guests were asked to meet you in the lobby rather than in your hotel rooms. There is a maximum occupancy rule put in place to assure the safety of guests and staff. Each unit has a maximum occupancy and yours was 4 in the one bedroom suite and 2 in the hotel room that your party was staying at. Your visitors meeting you in your unit would have put the number of people in your hotel room at 4, and the number of people in your one bedroom suite at 7! In case of an emergency this would have caused a big problem for everyone involved,
As for the breakfast charges once again I am very sorry that you were not addressed in a professional manner. Your one bedroom suite rented at $245/night included breakfast charges for four people. Your unit # 3 which you stayed at as a Timeshare exchange guest did not include breakfast. The $8.95 was the cost of the additional breakfast ordered by the guests staying in unit #3. This should have been explained properly and politely. I am sorry for my staff failure to do so.
Unfortunately at the time of your stay I was out of office and was made aware of the details of your stay after I returned and you were already gone. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to address any other issues.
We at the Nob Hill Inn are very proud of our customer service and have always received positive reviews in this category. We strive to continue being a comfortable and friendly place for all to stay , and I once again apologize for any negative experience you may have had.
Best regards.

The inn is more of a bed and breakfast than a true inn. The rooms were outstanding #14 had a suite with pleanty of room. The inn was decorated for the period ( 1800s) and breakfast was light but filling.
The location was close to the cable car links ( two blocks) and to some very fine dining. There is great french resturant a block and a half away. You do not need a car to get around with the metro passes for $20.00 each for three days.
The only issue we had was the traffic late at night. Even on the foruth floor it was a bit noisey. I would go back though.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not on the road way

The Nob Hill Inn is a nice little find in San Francisco. The Inn is in an excellent location – away from the bustle of Union Square with easy access to cable cars which take you pretty well anywhere in the downtown area. Staff were always super friendly and helpful.

The public spaces are lovely – like you are in someone’s Victorian home. Breakfast is available onsite. We did not take advantage of this feature. The only downside for us was that we had room 11, the smallest room in the Inn. While in some ways it is no smaller than some hotels, the layout was such that it was cramped. Certainly it was not optimum for a longish stay, especially with the extra luggage that entails. However, the room was clean and had all we needed. Plus, being on the very inside of the hotel (with windows facing other buildings but no streets) it was super quiet and relatively dark.

Granted – we were told we were getting the smallest room in the Inn so we knew what we were in for. While there, we caught a glimpse of a few other rooms, which are far more spacious, some with kitchens.

Overall our stay here was very pleasant. We would return, but would ensure we have a larger room. We certainly wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Nob Hill Inn, but if you are staying for more than a night or two you should get a larger unit.
