I have probably stayed here 15 times in the last 4 years, it's my home in SF. I always ask for the patio room which has nice bright light and access to a beautiful patio that is only accesible by one other room [but please don't try to get it when I am there!]. The inn-keeper Jan is very warm and welcoming; he makes a wonderful fresh breakfast. I always enjoy meeting people in the dining room over a fresh cup of coffee. The location in the Castro is great, and it's only about 10 minutes from the Golden Gate bridge.

Staying at The Inn is like coming home. A perfect hillside location on Castro and Market, there's a multitude of bars and great restaurants within easy walking distance. With the Muni subway and classic trolley bus line right on your doorstep downtown and the Embarcadero are bo more that 10/15 mins away. Jan is a wonderful host, stunning breakfasts and if you have the similar wonderful co-guests as we had, breakfasts can easily last until late morning with chatting coffee and Jan's great baked treats. We'll be back for sure.

certainly convenient to muni and in the heart of castro. place was well kept and quiet. staff was very welcoming...loved the free drinks, candy that was made available...even had whiskey in the room that i think was free too - but i am a vodka gal.

Room Tip: first floor rooms are best

My aunt and I stayed at the Inn in April. We had a lovely time. Jan is a wonderful host. You really feel as though you are at home and not a hotel. The breakfasts are out of this world. I looked foward to getting up everymorning. Eating with the other guests was a nice experience. Our room was very comfortable and even though it was directly facing the street, the noise didn't keep me awake. This is definately the place I would go stay in if you are going to be in San Fran. Please keep in mind that it is located in the Castro. If you are not comfortable being around gay men and women this might not be the area for you. Personally I felt very safe and enjoyed the atmosphere of the Inn and of the Castro itself.

Inn on Castro is very central to the main gay zone of the city and occupies several floors of an old building with character. The owner, Jan, cooks breakfast individually for each guest and in that respect it is pretty near to staying in someone's home. Bedrooms are somewhat time-warped but in this city location that all feels perfectly right-on. Our room had a great city view. Bathrooms were dated too but, like the rooms, pleasantly quirky. Our welcome was thorough and very friendly - every aspect of the inn was explained and we were offered a city map and local tips and info; 10/10 for that. Wi-fi is free. There is a lounge area. Breakfast is round a communal table - although have a chat with Jan in the welcoming kitchen (with terrace) while he is cooking: we has fresh asparagus with ours and loved the homemade banana bread.

I often travel alone, as it's a good way to meet new people. The Inn on Castro is just the place for that. The owner, Jan, was extremely welcoming and gave some good tips on the local area. Jan has lots of knowledge on the history of the Castro too. He's got a good sense of humour and really makes you feel at home.

The Yellow room was nice and clean. Breakfast was fab and the location is great for exploring San Francisco.

I'd definitely stay here again.

Thanks Jan

Andrew, Scotland

This was our first time staying at The Inn, a booking made online and after useful email contact with the owner. Location is perfect for people who want to be close to the Castro (you are in it and a 50 metre walk from the junction of Market st and The Castro). Jan the owner is very welcoming taking time to tell you much about the area and answer any questions you might have. The shared spaces in the house are immaculately clean, homely and artistically attractive. The White Room which we had booked was beautiful and interesting with a lovely view. Small touches like soft drinks in the fridge (for use without charge) and a decanter of liquer proved in the room (again without request or charge) during the stay were pleasant and much appreciated touches on the part of Jan. Breakfast lived up to the expectations created on the web site; fresh fruit and a wealth of cereals, home baked goods etc and then a tasty cooked breakfast (these are just perfect) along with a choice of fruit juices and tea and coffee waiting for you were a terrific start to the day. Jan was there to entertain, discuss anything on your mind and suggest things to do etc. When returning to The Castro will we stay there again?... absolutely. Is it a good location to access the rest of the city, again absolutely. One point to note, parking is inherently difficult if not a resident, and strictly enforced by the police. Jan does provide options and we found free parking about a 10 minute walk away where there was no ticketing issue. Next time we will hire a car when moving on from SF, as the public transport in the city is very very good.

Overall a gem of a place to stay, Jan and staff are the perfect hosts, location is excellent, food a delight, rooms gorgeous... did we enjoy our stay, feel we got value for money, will we stay again, should you book there....absolutely!

Room Tip: Email the owner with any questions you have.
