At first as one walks into the lobby the Clift seems "fashionably dark" and it takes the eyes a while to adjust. The three elevators (one red, one green, one blue) are similarly dark, but our room (416) was elegantly bright and fresh, being a corner room with windows on two walls.
A couple of minutes walk along Geary to Union Square makes for about as central as you'll get.
Having previously stayed at the Handlry I'd probably choose the Clift next time.
Remarkably knowledgeable staff, one of the nicest cocktail bars I've seen, set in a majestic historic hall, and a great breakfast too.
Only downside, expensive WiFi in the room, and the automatic adding of a gratuity for breakfast - otherwise, clean and peaceful, well situated and once your eyes settle, a classy lobby where the WiFi is free, but slow.
