“Fun spot for business trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2013

Visited San Fran for business in January and love, love, loved the Clift.

I'm into design in a big way and loved all the quirky touches in this hotel - the reception was brilliant with all its unique furniture and I really enjoyed sitting in front of the open fire.

Also really liked the lilac/white/perspex touches in lobby areas on different floors; felt very fresh and different and you could tell it had been designed incredibly well with all aspects considered.

Room was absolutely lovely, both in terms of design and all the fittings and bits you need ro a short break. The bathroom wasn't quite as huge and well-equipped as other hotels I've stayed in during trips to the States, but I almost liked that more - it felt very European and homely.

Really loved the bar downstairs - I'd visit again in a heartbeat if I was staying elsewhere in the city.

I know some people have commented about the area to the south, but it didn't bother me particularly - had a few nights out and didn't feel unsafe particularly, although maybe that comes from living in London! Anyway, you have Union Square a few steps down in the other direction!

Loved the conference rooms and facilities too, which I think is a first - never normally feel like they have much design/thought behind them, but they definitely did here!

hello furcoatonholiday,

Thanks for such a great review. You obviously have an eye for design and it is great that you appreciated all of the subtle aspects of the hotel. The hotel bar, the Redwood Room, has been a SF institution for close to 100 years and I agree, it is just too much fun! We hope you get the opportunity to visit us again soon.

All the best,

Ian

It was very crowded when we checked in for a one night stay over the weekend on a Saturday night. Valet parking is very expensive, and they park your car a separate lot a few blocks down, so be careful you don't leave anything behind in your car, since valet will have to go fumble in your car looking for it because they won't want to fetch your car out of the lot just so you can get your left item, only to repark your car again. Especially if it is really busy. The oversized chair was a statement piece and the hotel is very dark with a edgey modern minimalist decor. The bar area can get very packed, with great music, and as hotel guest, admission is simple, no wait. Service was pretty good. The lounge sitting area is much more quiet outside the bar.

The room was very sizeable as we had an upgrade. The bed was very comfortable and the large windows showcases the neighboring buildings with nice views and the city feel. I enjoyed the vanity table corner area outside the bathroom, as it was convenient.

The bathroom was sizeable for San Francisco standards with roomy counter space. The room is somewhat dimmer at night without the brightness from the daytime windows.

Just blocks outside the hotel is the heart of Union Square, with many shops, restaurants, and coffee shops. During off season, get can be a good value for the money. I would definitely stay there again, especially for the convenient location!

Very hip hotel just on the good side of Tenderloin. Don't venture more than 1 block South on foot. Room was clean, attractive, well supplied, and very comfortable bed. Walls are not sound proof - you can hear everything happening on either side of you. My shower had a slow drain, and I read other reviews with similar complaints.

There are better options for the business traveler and families, as this place caters to young hip singles, couples, and groups. If you can find the same rate at a place near Market St, might be a better choice. For example, there is no business traveler oriented breakfast service included in the rate. This is like the W with improved style and ambiance but fewer amenities.

Service was generally excellent, except for cocktail service in the Living Room (the lobby annex of the hotel bar, which itself is really more of a nightclub). Here, I often had to go hunt down the cocktail waitress. Once I ordered my first round, service was generally good thereafter. Same scenario on three trips though, so I take it this is their standard of service for greeting and taking your initial order. Snacks at the bar are very good though pricey. The warm pretzel braid and cheese plate are exceptional.

Recommend this place highly for young couples and groups who may place more emphasis on style than comfort.

Hello Tripp C,

Thanks for your positive review! I am happy you had a great time here. I do apologize for the Living Room service, the girls normally come around every 10-15 minutes to freshen up everyone's cocktails. I hope you found the service to be exceptional, and please come back soon!

All the best,

Ian

I have stayed at many Morgans hotels during my travels and found The Clift to be the best.
The lobby and furnishings throughout the hotel were beautiful - I loved the clubby feel and the oversized chairs.
Our room was spacious and the bed was amazingly comfortable with lovely plush linens and pillows.
Everyone we encountered at The Clift (doormen, concierge etc) were extremely helpful and friendly and provided us with excellent recommendations for restaurants etc.
The hotel itself is very well located close to Union Square and the shopping precinct. We used the Hop On Hop Off bus for sightseeing and transportation and the stop at Union Square was perfect walking distance for us.
My only gripe with The Clift and other Morgans hotels is that they charge for wifi!!! In this day and age and with the price of the rooms, SURELY wifi can be provided free of charge. I would even prefer to pay $15 extra in the room rate than have it as an extra charge upon arrival. I really don't understand the logic...
I highly recommend The Clift and would definitely stay here again!

Hi BBriedis,

Thank you so much for the glowing review! We work hard to ensure your experience is everything it can be and I am happy to hear that we succeeded. It means so much to us to hear about your perspective and the positive feedback is just an added bonus for us!

I understand your concern about the internet. In this day and age, you would expect this to be free, which is why a majority of rates offered now include internet, including our third party reservations like Expedia. Next time you stay with us, we will make sure you are paired with the right reservation for your needs and expectations. Have a great day!

I stayed at the Clift on my recent business trip. I got lucky as there was a conference in SF that week and all hotels were sold out including this one but one opened up, and I was able to snap it up the day before I arrived. The lucky part was also that I would have normally stayed at the usual hotels that I normally stay at if they were not sold out - so I got to experience the Clift. Now, I must say that this was an exceptional experience as I was upgraded to the deluxe suite on the 8th floor (thank you Pamela!), I believe. The suite is bigger than my condo! It has a living room and an 8-person dining area, a separate bedroom with an en suite powder room and bathroom. It's unfortunate that I didn't really get to enjoy it since I checked in late and checked out early (I guess that's why I got the upgrade as it was turned over very quickly). Nonetheless, it was an awesome room. The lobby is quite cool - like the vibe, love the giant size chair and the bar serves good cocktails (had cocktails here in prior visits to SF not during this visit). Have heard about a Red Room but haven't visited. Oh and the amenities are pretty awesome.

Room Tip: Room 828 was awesome and great for big group.

Thanks for your feedback. I love our deluxe suites as well! They are a great size, they are fun, and very comfortable rooms. It is too bad you did not get to enjoy it longer but makes for a good excuse to come back.

When I entered the hotel I was impressed by the stylish lobby with an oversized chair, and many areas with chairs and sofas.

My room was on the 17th floor, quite large and very pleasant, with a very comfortable king bed. Curiously the bathroom was small, with a shower inside the tub (it's never as good as a real separate shower). Some renovation would be great in the bathroom.

For breakfast the choice was decent but not fantastic.

The bar was very lively most of the nights, it's definitively a great place to have a drink and for fun (very good music).

The staff was very nice, especially the concierge (very helpful to find tickets for Alcatraz).

As for the location it's about 5 minutes walking from Union Square, it's perfect to explore San Francisco.

Overall it's a great hotel, very stylish and lively.

Hi Chris75,

Thank you for your kind words! If you were on the 17th floor, then you were probably in my favorite room in the whole hotel! The 17th floor is one of the best kept secrets about our hotel, as each room affords sweeping views of the city and the high ceilings make the space just beautiful. It's also a nice treat to be on a floor with only 3 other rooms so you have more privacy.

I am so happy to hear about your experience and very thankful that you took the time to provide us a review from your perspective.
