We stayed here for 3 days at the end of May. The room was an decent size as we were only there for 3 days. The room was clean and tidy but the rooms could do with a refurb. The hotel is central to a lot of shops, bars and restaurants. The staff are friendly and helpful especially Kevin.

There is plenty to like about this old hotel, ideally located in the center of San Francisco. The more churlish of travellers might note that the decor is dated and it needs repainting. But my small and spotlessly clean room had everything I needed including a comfortable double bed, bijou bathroom (with good toiletries) and a large walk in closet. A ceiling fan added to the charm. WiFi was free and good. The staff are friendly and everything is on your doorstep, including a 24-hour Walgreens, 7-11, a diner, Starbucks and transport to all points. Yes, you'll hear the clang of the street car and other noises of the city. Isn't that the point?

Hotel Cartwright dates from 1913 and has had five recent owners. It has 114 rooms. There is only one small elevator. The first floor bar has no liquor license. The place is a block from Union Square and in the heart of San Francisco. The place is dated, a bit musty, but it was priced less than $200 which is a bargain given the location. My room barely fit a queen bed and desk. It was clean; the bed was pillow top soft. There was no thermostat, but it was still comfortable with a ceiling fan, radiator and open window (no screen). The walls are thin and you can hear all of the showers and hall noise. The front desk stated that the hotel was due for future renovation which it needs. The staff was friendly.

Spent 3 nights at this low frills but well located hotel. The Staff, especially Lidia was most helpful when my wife fell ill. They arrange for a late checkout and Lidia personally came up to the 4th floor to talk with cleaning staff to insure that my wife would not be undisturbed.

The rooms are small, but clean. The hotel is more than a 100 years old but there is WiFi throughout, high def TVs, and really small bathrooms. Small but not unusually small for a 3 star hotel in an old building.

Room Tip: Note: if you're not used to city noises like the clang clang clang of the trolley, and you like fresh air by opening the windows, and you don't sleep like a baby, bring some ear plugs to sleep.

If you're considering to stay on SF downtown, this is the right place. The room is clean and comfortable, the staff is polite and always available if you need any information or any help. There's free Internet access inside the room and in the lobby as well. For a quick breakfast, you can drink a coffee in the morning. Also, you're a few steps from the famous historic Powell/Hyde cable car line and a block and half from Union Square. If you need to take a bus, there's a bus stop right in front of the hotel where you can take route 30 and go from Pier 1 to AT&T Ballpark. In case you're hungry, there's a diner on the corner of the street, a Walgreens on the other corner and a 7-Eleven in front of. Definitely I recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: I suggest you choose a room at the highest level because Sutter St. could be very noisy some times.
