“Central location, friendly and helpful staff”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

If retro is your thing and you don't mind smaller rooms, this centrally located hotel is a good choice. Smiling and helpful staff (ever rarer these days), comfortable bed and a good chair to sit and read (almost non-existent in hotels these days). Street noise can be intrusive at times, so light sleepers/day nappers need to pack earplugs.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back

This was my second stay at this hotel and I am really growing fond of it. Let me say I am an old house nut so the age and style is perfect. I also like the smaller size and easy going attitude. While rooms are small, they're comfortable. The lounge area is lovely - nothing like having your morning coffee in front of the fireplace. Also, great and convenient location!

After travelling by train from Chicago, which lasted for three days and two nights, we arrived in San Francisco and went straight to the artwright Hotel, which I had booked from Australia on the Internet.
I had asked for a quiet room at the back of the hotel as we wanted a good nights sleep before returning to Australia the next day. We were greeted very warmly and told that we had been upgraded to a suite. We had booked a king size room. The suite was more than comfortable, very clean, very pleasant and on the 6th floor, and very quite although it did face Sutter street. Our choice could not have been better. Very comfortable bed and lots of clean fluffy and new towels etc in the large bathroom. and coffee making facilities in the sitting room.
Although the hotel does not have a restaurant, there are plenty of places for breakfast, Starbucks and a Seven Eleven just to name two. There is also a great Diner on the corner of Powell and Sutter where we had lunch with a discount voucher from the Hotel.

The staff organized a pickup to the airport for us so everything went very smoothly.
Hopefully, we can return to San Francisco sometime in the future and we will certainly stay at this very convenient located Hotel in the Union Square area. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Room Tip: Ask when making your booking for your requirements and I am sure it will be attended to.

Rooms a little small but location of hotel and staff made our stay enjoyable. Hotel is in a great location just off Sutter and Powell. Staff was more than willing to help with any requests we had. Great hotel overall.

My wife and I stayed here a couple nights during our first trip together in San Francisco October 14-16. The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. The room wasn't too small and the bathroom was a little cramped but not to bad. The best thing about this hotel is the location, right on the outside of Union Square and safe to walk everywhere. On our last night, in the middle of the night the bed room light just turned on. I did a little research and saw that the hotel had other names in the past and was wondering if anyone else had any odd experiences staying there. Overall a good place to stay.

This is your typical 100 year old hotel in SF. Price wasn't too bad considering the rates in the city. Great location in union square close to Powell St cable car, Nob Hill, Market Street, etc. Rooms are small and bathroom is smaller. Street noise is a problem if your room fronts to Sutter Street, but hey,,,your in San Francisco. Parking is not on site and a block away ($36 self park). The staff was great and the night manager Art was wonderful with my 10 year old son. Showed him all kinds of magic tricks and riddles...my son thought he was great. The bar is closed and they are working on getting their liquor license restored (lost it when ownership changed). Not a problem, as we just corked a bottle ourselves and enjoyed wine and cheese we brought.

My boyfriend took me on vacation to San Francisco for my birthday and we stayed at the lovely Cartwright Hotel in Union Square. Wow! You couldn't be more in the mix of the city if you tried. The location of this hotel couldn't be more perfect. Plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops. Very central to everything you could possibly need.
Upon entering the hotel, it's truly beautiful and quaint with a nice lounge and bar downstairs in the lobby. And the staff have been so nice and helpful, even upon parking for the hotel. They have Valet but the parking garage is on the street behind just a short walk away.
Our room was on the front face of the hotel and we had a beautiful view of the main street out front. It was great to be able to people watch out the window, we even had a window out our shower. The bathroom was on the smaller side but you could wash your hands while sitting on the toilet if need be, which could never be a bad thing. The room was small and quaint but it was really nice. Incredibly comfortable bed, had to have been a pillow top because boy, did I not want to wake up.
I would say, Overall, this hotel was awesome. If you want a special, friendly, boutique, San Francisco style place to stay, the Cartwright Hotel is the place for you.
