“Best Place to stay in San Fran.”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

The Adelaide Hostel what a beautiful place. from the moment you walk in the staff is ready to help you, from checking in, to storing your bags, to helping you find your way around the city, great Staff in good moods :) I stayed for 11 day and it was the best time iv had, i love the activities they have set up for each night of the week from chili night, wine and cheese night, to pub crawls and more. This place ROCKS. This little gem feels like a home away from home. Also gotta give a huge shout out to the Dakota, another great place to stay. When ever Im in San Fran i will always stay at the Adelaide. See you Next Year :)

Our room was clean and tidy w it's own bathroom, fridge and microwave. For $52 pp/pn it was great value, especially considering our room was made up each day & fresh towels ! The hostel staff were friendly & there were free planned activites each night !

Despite being a little way down a dead end alley this hostel was very friendly. It has a very cosy feeling about the place and the staff were very helpful. The private rooms were very nice and had an en suite and they even made our beds every morning!!! (hence the 5*!). Breakfast was very good with bowls of fresh fruit prepared for us, porrides, bagels, muffins et al. Union Square was about a minutes walk away. Did have one night which was very noisy with a drunk outside but you could get that anywhere. All in all a good place to stay and wouldn't hesitate going back there again.

I always prefer to stay in hostels instead of hotels because of the people you meet and the overall experience. And the Adelaide Hostel was one of the best places I've ever had the pleasure of staying in! They were very accommodating to the business traveler, with plenty of common areas that clearly had a lot of care put into the decoration and atmosphere. I was able to get work done as well as meet the other travelers who were passing through, and also enjoyed socializing at some of the free evening events that were offered, such as wine and cheese. I made good friends during my short time there and was happy to get a chance to explore the city with them- San Francisco is beautiful and I highly recommend not only the downtown Union Square shopping area, but the Mission if you get a chance, and Golden Gate Park as well as the historic Haight Ashbury, which has lots of great vintage shopping.

I forgot to mention the best part of the Adelaide Hostel which is the huge free breakfast! That, and the staff are all very helpful and knowledgeable about the city. I recommend 100%!

Stayed here over the weekend of a large music festival which was taking place in the city and they put the price up by around $17 per night. Furthermore they charged some pay in my room less than they charged me. Very unfair tactic for a youth hostel for travellers with limited funds and indeed, knowledge of events in the city, such as the music festival.

Total price came to $55 a night which no youth hostel in the world is worth. Asides from that, good vibe, good rooms. Could do with a few more showers - 4 between entire dorms in hostel isnt enough and queues each morning.

Hi Tim,
Thank you for your response! We value your feedback. You happened to stay during one of the busiest weekends of the year in San Francisco, and so what you were paying was a similar rate to what you would be paying with any of the other hostels in the city. This is standard for any hotels or lodging, that rates go up when availability is limited, and I assure you that you would have had a similar experience at any other hostel on that weekend. Your roommate who was paying less must have booked his reservation much farther in advance. This is also standard, whether you are booking a hotel or airfare, that the farther out you book, the lower the rate, since that also has to do with availability. So, it's not a deliberate scheme since we are dedicated foremost to providing affordable lodging for our travelers- it's just the necessary par for the course of being one of the largest hostels in one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. But we're glad you enjoyed the other parts of your stay and safe travels!

Stayed here for 4 nights in October in a 4 person dorm. There are some great things about this hostel and some really bad. The first thing to note is that if you book the hostel through Hostel World the price you are quoted and told you will pay on arrival does NOT include tax of 16% - you will have to pay this on top. The hostel know this but don't do anything about it, so your room ends up a lot more than you think it will cost. They also tried to claim that the deposit we had paid to Hostel World was a payment to Hostel World and not to be deducted from the amount we owed the hostel - they did back down on this point - but all in all very annoying start. Plus your room ends up being pretty damn expensive for a hostel.

On the plus side, the location is really great. The breakfasts are very, very good. The common area is really nice. Free wifi which is decent quality, four computers and printing services. Large storage area for your luggage, which they are very relaxed about people using. Good number of bathrooms. They vaccum your room everyday, take out your trash everyday. Lockers in all rooms. Staff were really friendly and tried to be helpful (although did give us wrong information a couple of times) and will book tours etc. for you.

On the downside, our room smelt really bad. It also got really hot. The room was noisy, so you had to decide between sleeping with the window open and all of the noise, or closed and really hot (and still a lot of noise!). Didn't manage to sleep past around 6.30 on any of the days we were there due to the noise inside and outside the hostel. Room over looked the alley next to very noisy street - although I guess maybe that is what you get for the location. Room was very small and cramped, but again I guess it is a hostel. Toilets were not great.

Warm staff and environment! Don't get fooled by the fact that it is at the back of an alley, it has nothing to do with what is inside its doors and it is located in a very nice area or the city, right downtown. Great kitchen to prepare your meals. Fridges are available to keep your food for the entire time of your stay. Breakfast is available every morning with anything you want: bagels, toasts, cereals, fruits, oatmeal, muffins, orange juice, coffee... You really feel like you are being taken care of and people want you to feel at home as much as possible. They arrange activities and nights out for their travelers to meet with each other. Everyone is really trying to help you out for whatever issue you have. I could not find the place when I arrived from the train station and so I called and one of the receptionist went out to get me 2 blocks away. That is customer service! They also helped me book my wine tasting tour and I got a great discount on it since I was staying at that hostel (Edge of the world Day tours, I recommend). They have an entire wall of flyers for you to plan your activities in San Francisco and again, activities that you get discounts on. Another thing I got a discount on was with that bike tour company named Blazing Saddles. Rooms are pretty decent and lockers are available in the rooms themselves. Bathrooms are clean, numerous and convenient. There is a great quiet common room, warmly decorated with many comfortable couches and tables. Cleaning facilities are easy to use. I've seen people of all ages, so it is a very welcoming place to stay. Only bad thing that happened to me was to see a bug running on my bed structure and another one in the bathroom, but receptionists were really concerned when I mentioned it and I don't doubt they are being very careful about it.

Room Tip: As a girl, I would choose girls' dorms instead of mixed dorms and not over 6 persons' dorms...
