Private Rooms are Excellent and Comfortable.
It's the middle of the city, and you get what you pay for. What was important to me was cleanliness and friendliness of other guests. And hot water! There were times when we could hear a few unwanted noises through the open windows and walls, however.

This was the one time trip advisor failed me. Either the reviewers have much lower standards than I do (which is saying something as I dont expect much) or they were paid off by Adelaide. We booked a private room for approx 85$, which horribly was a bargain. We werent informed thru the reservaton that the rooms were actually in a seperate building, so we had to waste time lugging around bags when they could have just given better directions. The various people working at the desk were not too bad, but I wouldnt say they were friendly either. Tiny tiny room, that was a little rundown. Breakfast which according to their website and reviews included hot cereal etc was ridiculous. They just put out giant jars of jam and peanut butter with commual utensils, and packages of bagels, english muffins and bread. If you were lucky and got up when they first start breakfast you could get some browning cut up fruit and coffee in a paper cup. What a dissapointment. Its not worth saving 20$ a night to stay here. Just dont do it. Maybe if they charged 50-60$/night it would be closer to the value of what they provide, but for 80+ its a total rip off, especially since they promise more than they deliver. You are better off going to the best western down the street. Yuck

I can't stress strongly enough how no-body should ever stay here!! We were picked up from the airport by a transfer service, who stopped the minibus at the top of an alleyway, before opening the doors and demanding our money before getting our bags out (because he clearly knew how horrible this hostel was!!) we booked a private 'ensuite' room for 4 girls. we walked up the alleyway to find the hostel and dragged our suitcases up some stairs (thanks to the staff for their help... NOT) they took our reference etc and told us we were staying in a 'hotel' around the corner... we were quite happy to hear this going off what we had seen of Adelaide. Big mistake. We walked into said hotel, to be greeted by staff who clearly didn't want to be there. We got given our room key and pointed to the lift, which looked like it should have gone out with the dinosaurs - the lift was THAT bad we got told not to go in with more than 2 of us at a time and to hold the button the whole way up otherwise it wouldn't work. So the first 2 of us went up to the room, as we got out of the lift I tried to send it back down for our friends, it took about 5 attempts before it went back down. We walked into the room to find a dive. It was small, dingy, and felt disgusting. The wardrobes had big cracked mirrored doors and the fridge was mouldy. The bath already had water in. During check in at the Adelaide we had been told about a bar crawl and if we wanted to go to meet outside the hostel at a certain time. We went before this time to find they had already gone and the staff who hadn't gone just left us waiting outside without bothering to tell us (thanks for that) so we went out ourselves got very drunk just so we could bear to sleep in the hostel. There was no safe in the room so my friend left her ipad in the safe in the reception area, when we came back in at 3am and asked for it back, we went to get our room key out to prove it was my friends to be told 'it's ok I trust you' (could have been ANYBODY!) we decided we couldn't bare to stay there the remaining 3 nights so booked another hotel and moved on. We did ask for a refund (and got it) I cannot stress enough not to stay there.

his is a great hostel for budget travelers, the location is excellent, close to all the sights & easy to access. The dorms were small & clean, with lockers which is always a bonus. Most of the staff were great, Mary was lovely & her walking tour is fab - really informative & a good way to see the city! Some of the other guys were great too especially with nights out (William & Jason). The breakfast is amazing for a hostel. Great communal areas making it a really good place to meet other people, especially if you're travelling alone! Wound definitely recommend the Adelaide to others.

We too booked a private room at the Adelaide for 7 nights in January and got shunted over to the Dakota. There were pluses and minuses but on the whole I would try to find a different hotel next time. It was inexpensive but I didn't feel we got good value for what I did spend
Pros - clean bedding, no bed bugs, comfortable bed. Light, airy room. Kitchen available. Friendly, interesting guests.
Cons:
Wifi access in rooms was intermittent. Constantly went out for hours at a time - was very frustrating for several reasons. As a tourist, you use the internet to check out restaurants, hours of museums, etc.... Also, tv in room had three snowy channels - no news - virtually useless. Again, makes internet access more important. When we called the front desk, we were told there wasn't much they could do, but they assured us there was access on the ground floor -- of course, we were on the 6th floor, so not so convenient to go down (and up) 6 flights of stairs, even if elevator used (see comments re elevator below.) This problem with Wifi access was enough for me not to stay here again.
Hot water iffy. Ran out of hot water before the end of my first shower. Talked to the desk clerk later about it and they said there would be less of a problem if I took my shower at off-peak hours. Did that for the rest of the trip and never ran out again but still had to constantly adjust the water temp during a shower - the range between scalding and icy was very small -- and it took constant adjustment -- I guess because others in the building were using water or flushing toilets at the same time? Anyway, another big minus, to a cold, tired tourist at the end of a long day.
Indifference of the staff, basic hospitality. Except for one charming women, all the other hotel desk staff were lousy. The charming woman told us about the lovely creperie kittycorner from the hotel called "Honey, Honey" (long hours, good food, reasonable prices and always available internet) but nobody else gave us much in the way of helpful information or seemed interested in doing so. (The guy checking us in actually told me after taking my credit card that he was born the year I became an Amex member -- nice.... ) It always felt more like we were entering a dorm with an RA at the desk then entering a hotel for which we were paying money.
Elevator. Ancient. Posted max limit 600 lbs. It made me nervous everytime I got on it -- always stopped about 6 inches below the floor when it took us to the 6th floor. Wasn't working one of the days we were there and we had to shlepp luggage up the stairs.
Street noise. Even on the 6th floor, bothered enough to use ear plugs to sleep. Hotel is at the top of the tenderloin district and there is a lot of late night noise on weekends and traffic noise during business rush hours. The windows aren't insulated and thus the noise. Also made room hot if we left the blinds open on a sunny day and very cold at night if we didn't.

Room Tip: If you care about wifi, stay close to ground floor. Use ear plugs.

Stayed here for 2 nights in a 4 bed dorm. The hostel is really nice, the rooms and bathrooms are clean. Nice big lounge area to hang out, use computers etc. there is a downstairs kitchen where the free breakfast is served everyday. It was so good, fresh fruit salad, bagels, toast, homemade porridge with apples sultanas etc.
Perfect downtown location close to everything and plenty of public transport close by to get other places. Nothing negative to say about this place, all good.
