“You've Got To Stay Here!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2014

Such a great place to stay in the middle of San Francisco. The service is outstanding -- every single person who was at the desk was helpful, always. The hotel has great charm along with its history. The evening wine pours are much fun; the bar food is really good; the events, including Movies on Monday are perfect ways to complete or compliment a day. I am definitely booking here again. In fact, my group stayed on two occasions during this last trip since we broke up the trip with side ventures to wine country.

Many choices in San Francisco, but this is one to consider. The hotel was fully booked every night!

Room Tip: No noise in any of the areas of this hotel. We stayed in two different rooms on each night of a thre...

A nice clean hotel with a very good position that's relatively close to everything you'll want to see. The staff are very good and we got upgraded as it was our honeymoon. The hotel looks slightly dated but it adds to the charm in my opinion. Good value too

We stayed at Hotel Rex for a few nights and, while the staff in unfailingly friendly and the décor is classy and tasteful, we found the room wasn’t quite perfect.

The Rex is situated about a two minute walk from Union Square and near the cable car turnaround so is perfect for your average tourist, plus there’s a reasonable garage just down the road on Mason if you’re parking up. Our room was up on the seventh floor and didn’t boast much of a view but you can hardly blame the Rex for the layout of San Francisco. It was a bit of a shame however that the room’s aircon unit was so very loud, making it tricky to sleep with the air conditioning up. This meant we would often wake up sweating and no, this wasn’t due to nightmares about San Francisco’s aggressive tramps.

Meanwhile in the bathroom the shower wasn’t the warmest at certain times of the day, potentially due to limited water storage space, while the entire suite was a bit on the small side especially with luggage in tow. This may be due to the Rex being one of the oldest hotels in the area so bear that in mind if you don’t like travelling light.

As I’ve said all the Rex team are friendly and the free wine hour in the bar was a nice touch too. The lift is decorated with old census pages, which is nice, while the handpainted lampshades add an arty feel. All in all not a bad hotel in a good location, just happens to be a bit pokey for our taste.

After the MGM in Vegas this was a little gem in San Francisco. Small & intimate, the service was slow at times but the staff on reception were always helpful & friendly. Location is hard to beat, very close to Union Square. Overall we were very happy with our stay.

My friends and I visited this hotel in June - and were instantly impressed with the charm and location. The bedroom and bathroom was certainly spacious for 3. We knew there would be some missing amenities given that it was a boutique hotel however we did not expect the service to be as disappointing as it was.

We stayed for 5 nights, and there was at least one interaction per day from different staff members that provided poor customer service. Examples included, the front desk was rude when asking about parking (we were told it was included, and the front desk refused us), the Hotel Rex restaurant was extremely rude when we asked for water for our tea when they ran out, the hotel cleaning staff did a poor job, etc.

I realize that all of these seem trivial - but these experiences really took away the enjoyment of our stay at the hotel.

If you want to see San Fran, this is the place to stay. Right next to China Town and Union Square. Great location. The hotel is a bit dingy inside and the lift and stairs were tiny, The bedroom was fine but very small - one small double bed with a little room to walk around it- smaller than we had been used to. The staff were lovely both on reception (great advice) and on the bar. Loved Lois diner on the corner.

Room Tip: Ask for the largest they have.
