“A fantastic Stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2014

My family and I stayed at the Rex twice on our America trip - first in late December and then again in late January.
It was our first stop when we arrived in America after so many hours on the plane from Australia and it was just an amazing place to stay!
We had such great service, all the staff were so friendly and helpful and we just LOVED the bar!
The whole theme of the hotel is great - we even got a beautiful Christmas Tree made out of books! The bar is called The Library and books and bookshelves line the walls.

We had both a double room (two double beds) and a standard room (one queen bed) and both were great! It reminded us very much of some of the old worldy hotels in Europe and while the decor and rooms may not be modern and plush, they are comfortable and very cosy :)

We loved every aspect of our stay and the location was truly fantastic! Lori's down the road is a great diner and the short walk to Union Square meant we felt right in the mix of things all the time.

Definitely would 100% recommend!

What a great find! First, they sent a private car to the airport. We checked in easily and scoped out the clutter - the wonderful clutter! - of books everywhere. It looks like my idea of what Sherlocke's home might've been. Almost stuffy but just enough air space to feel comfortably enveloped in endless things to look at. They serve wine at some point but we were never there at the right time. The elevator looks and sounds like it is original to the city or maybe the prototype of elevators. It is sloooow. However, being decoupaged entirely in old phone book pages makes passing the time in the small space pleasant. The room was a little wee. Clean. Homey. Like your Grammie's attic bedroom. Good staff.
One thing I'd really like to add is that they use Lather bath products. It was what I've come to learn is Lemongrass Bamboo. ILOVED it! I loved it so much, in fact, that I brought the soap box home and have ordered all of my bath products from them ever since - and all in that heavenly, lemony scent. I can't remember another time when hotel toiletries had me swooning!
Good location, in the middle of it all. Very affordable. We got a package price for the 2 of us for 5 days including flights starting from Raleigh for $1600. What a deal!
SF is my favorite city in the world with the possible exception of Kyoto. This is a good place to hang your hat while enjoying a truly wonderful city.

Room Tip: If you hate waiting, stay on a lower floor and skip the ancient lift.

I spent NYE at Hotel Rex and loved this cozy spot. Located in a touristy area, I wasn't expecting the intimate feel but was pleasantly surprised. The lobby area is full of books and feels just like a living room of a close family member. The rooms are decently sized with basic bathrooms (tub included) with a spacious bedroom area. Everything was clean and taken care of and the hotel staff generously allowed us a very late checkout to make the most of our stay. Conveniently near the BART and only about 35 minutes from the airport and walking distance to so many bars/restauraunts. Would absolutely stay here again.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The man at the front desk when we got there was nice enough to let us check in early. The lobby area has a really cool 1940's vibe to it and they offer free coffee and tea from 9-10 in the morning. We stayed in a Deluxe Queen which was a pretty small room but the bed was comfy and we weren't facing the street so it was really quiet. The bathroom could use some updating but it wasn't ugly and it was clean. If you're visiting SF for the first time, this is a great location. The hotel is only a couple of blocks from everything Union Square has to offer and is right next to a Trolley stop (costs $6 per person, one-way). The building is only seven stories high so the view won't be great but why would you want to stay inside anyway?

Got the hotel on a priceline bid, which is advised. Regular rates are far too high. Booked a queen, got upgraded to an ex king for no charge which was wonderful. Staff was amazing. Maids, too loud even though we had a privacy sign on, they knocked every morning. Only bad thing. Otherwise, great value, location....next to cable car stop.

We stayed here for three nights while visiting San Francisco. The hotel is in a great location to get around the city. The service is friendly, helpful and very welcoming there is even a free drinks hour. Décor is very quirky if you want somewhere modern don't stay here but if you like something a bit different and unique it is very much worth checking out. Our room was clean and comfortable. We did not eat here so cannot comment on the food. I would recommend this hotel and would stay again it is a great price for the location.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night in between wine tasting in Napa and Sonoma. It is a charming little boutique hotel right where you want to be in downtown San Fran. We didn't get a chance to spend any time at the bar or eat here so I can't comment on that. Decor is reminiscent of the 1930's. Our room was clean, and typically small for an older building, but not too small that we felt cramped. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful with directions and taxi service. The only downside was the teeny, tiny elevator ...not good if you have more than a carry-on or if there are several people waiting to get on.
