“Very Old and dated hotel.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2013

This hotel had a lovely atmosphere and the staff were extremely friendly as was the little dog who posed for photographs. The food was nice too. Unfortunately I cant say anything good about the rooms, old beds old televisions old furniture and worn carpet. They had a small lift which worried me as it was so old so I took the stairs. The location is great and very close to everything and I cant stress enough how nice the staff were.

First time in 'Frisco'. There for a big wedding. Had a great time and part of that great experience was the Hotel Rex.

What you get is a really nice put together small hotel in the middle of things with a great "Library" theme. The hotel room was excellent with comfortable beds...and, well, what more do you really care about in a hotel?

One thing that really impressed? The noise factor at least in our room was almost non-existent. It was really amazingly quiet! Loved it.

Oh, they also have really good food.

Look, for the price I don't think you can beat the Rex if you want a smaller more intimate place. Kind of like a really cool bed and breakfast stuck in the just below Nob Hill.

Try it out.

My partner and I stayed here for 10 nights in early October. After a long and tiring flight we arrived mid afternoon to a warm welcome and were assigned a room on the 5th floor (512 if memory serves). Nice room, but as many have commented on not the biggest, but perfectly fine for our needs. Having arrived in the early stages of a bit of heatwave it was nice to see there was standalone air conditioning unit going as without it the room was a bit of a sweatbox, especially at night.
Most fixtures and fittings were in good repair apart from a rather tatty and rattly window which was a pain as when wanting a bit of breeze we had to prop it open with a container as the fittings were broken. Apart from this one gripe we had a nice bed, bathroom, wardrobe and large flat panel TV.
Rest of the hotel had a really nice vibe, nicely appointed and maintained. Great bar and barman too, mean cocktails!, and of course we partook of the free glass of wine offered on a few occasions.
Did not eat either Breakfast or Dinner so no comment there but the food we saw in the evenings looked nice enough.

I rated this hotel very good due to the staff....not the rooms. I arrived late, in the rain, to find out I did not have a room! However, they arranged a room at their sister property, Galleria Park, and picked up the cost of my room! Sad part is I had to switch hotels the next night...Galleria Park is nicer, and rooms are remodeled. Hotel Rex needs to do the same.
The room was OK, bathroom needs remodeling, bed was comfy. But the very loud window air conditioner was annoying.
Library Bar is nice, and again the staff was wonderful!
Location is perfect for walking to Union Square.

We took our 2 dogs to Hotel Rex. It's located near Union Square. The staff were very friendly, and accommodating, even giving us treats for the dogs.

One of the tough things about taking dogs to the City is that it's not always easy to find a place to eat that will allow dogs. The hotel allowed us to have the dogs in the bar area, where we could order food. The staff also recommended places we could go with the dogs, which was very helpful.

The room was spacious, and more on the "old world" side than ultra modern. That was fine with us. If there was any issue, it was that we couldn't easily take the dogs out - i.e. no "yard" area to easily let them out, but hey, it's downtown SF!

Room Tip: We preferred the room towards the back of the hotel - it was bright, quiet, and had good vibes (vs...

We stayed at the Hotel Rex as part of a group gathering that was part work, part vacay. The hotel was definitely pricier than we would usually pick ($225/night, we are budget travelers!). We were really pleasantly surprised and would recommend the hotel highly. The location was a few blocks off of Union Square, about five blocks from the BART. The design theme was literary, which was exciting because H is in publishing and we still love our old-fashioned books. The Library Bar had a lovely wine happy hour for guests (free wine, $5 food). The floors had fun drawings and quotes from San Francisco writers. We did not eat at the hotel, preferring breakfast from a bagel shop a few blocks away. The room was very bright and comfortable, and although we were warned that the front of the hotel was a little noisy we were not bothered (although noise-sensitive guests should request the back of the hotel). The bathroom was large, the main room was cozy but big enough and the wifi was strong. We appreciated the option to skip the daily cleaning in exchange for a $5 bar credit, and the staff emptied our trash and replaced shampoo etc anyway. We would stay again as long as the price was in our budget.

Room Tip: Front is bright and has a tiny bit of street noise.

My three night stay lived completely up to expectations. These are the sorts of hotels that I enjoy staying in. Small, friendly and obliging . Great atmosphere in the Library Bar and as good a hotel for singles as I've stayed in.
