“Rooms are depressing”
Reviewed November 3, 2013 via mobile

Ok the library bar is great. The idea of the hotel is also fun. Location is very good. The rooms are tiny, there was one tiny window in our room. No reading chair and well the whole room was just dark and dreary. We avoided going back during the day.

Spent 4 nights here in October and have to say what a brilliant hotel to have as a base for SF, couple of minutes from Union Square, upon arrival we were offered a choice of room, bigger room or smaller room with a better view, the hotel was absolutely spotless and the staff were super friendly, free glass of wine of an evening was a very nice touch, only had breakfast once in the hotel and it was pretty good. The staff treated the guests more like family members than guests, the decor in the bedroom complimented the boutique theme that ran through the hotel.

Room Tip: Stayed in Room 209, no view as such to speak of but it was a larger room.

All of the staff was extremely friendly and helpful at all times. The welcome was very warm, the room service was extremely friendly.
My request for a specific room location was absolutely fulfilled.
The room was very clean throughout my stay.
The location is quite good, MUNI stops are just a few steps away.
The room and the bathroom are not huge but reasonably sized.
The design seems old fashioned and sometimes a bit quirky (crying eyes as room numbers, light-purple bathroom tiles with a mint-green door and beige walls)

The airconditioner is one of those window mounted boxes that seem to have the primary purpose of making noise.
If you happen to have a neighbor who thinks San Francisco is too hot and the air condition needs to run all day and night, you are in for a sleepless night, as the sound insulation is poor. Even though I had one of the rooms to the back, which are said to be quieter it was way too loud.\ and I had a really hard time sleeping, even with earplugs.

If the air conditioners were removed or replaced with quiet ones, I would certainly recommend the hotel, but with them I do not.

The hotel location is the selling point given its strategic location in the city. Interior design is nice and comfortable and all the staffs are friendly. They have an exquisite bar in the hotel with good choices of wine too. Our room is oppposite to the elevator but there are no noises from the elevator.

Given this is our first time in SF, my husband and i decided to look for something strategic so that we can travel around conveniently. ie Hotel Rex is in the heart of the city we spent three nights at this hotel. We can find everything we want around the hotel, convenience stores, restaurants shopping public transport. Interior of the hotel is clean, nice and quiet, staff is super friendly and we enjoy our free wine at the bar too.

We spent three nights here and were very pleased with our choice of hotel. The location couldn't be better for exploring San Francisco being only 2 minutes walk to Union Square and lots of transportation options. Our room was not huge but was perfectly adequate for two. It was clean, well appointed and had a decent bathroom. There was no view. Instead of daily house keeping, we chose the option of a $5 daily voucher which could be used in the bar/restaurant. However, we found the breakfast to be very expensive and not worth the money. There was a very pleasant nightly "get together" with a generous glass of wine on the house. This was a nice opportunity to chat to other guest if you wished. The front desk staff were exremely helpful with things like printing boarding passes and making restaurant suggestions and reservations. We enjoyed our stay.

Just a block and a half from Union Square. Very nice old building, well kept up. Book and library theme. The elevator is papered with an old Social Register. Quiet. Rooms are small, but more than adequate.
Food and bar are good fare, neither exceptionally good or bad.
Large bathroom. Everything very clean and well maintained. Not a concrete and glass palace, much more character.
Staff are friendly and helpful.
I can't imagine a place that would suit me better.
