Had a 3 night stay at this hotel, very quaint, bar area nice to sit and relax, nice touch giving you a free glass of wine between 5-6 pm, great after a long day sightseeing. Room was very nice, lots of choice on t.v. Staff friendly and helpful, advising on best modes of transport! Very enjoyable stay and would recommend.

The first impression of Hotel Rex was excellent. We arrived there late (23:30!) but the staff certainly had not clocked off for the night. They were more than accommodating and couldn't have been more friendly. A couple of free glasses of wine certainly didn't go a miss! The hotel bar is a great place to hang out before or after an evening out. The bar staff were great, and the bar is well stocked! The rooms were of an excellent standard, with all the amenities that you'd expect from a top class hotel. Clean and comfortable, a stay here is a great relaxing base for a city break here. The hotel is excellently situated just a 5 minute walk from Union square, right in the heart of the shopping district in San Fran. But with the trolley cars and taxis, you're not far away from the rest of the great San Francisco sights!

Spent 2 nights at the Hotel Rex and loved it. The library bar is a fun place to hang out and it's a nice idea to have a free glass of wine every evening. There is also live jazz sometimes but we missed it (even though we only arrived at 20:30, so it stops very early). All of the staff was very, very friendly and quick to offer help and suggestions on just about anything. The location is good, safe neighborhood close to chinatown. There is also a great cocktail bar just next door. The Hyde st cable cars are just nearby if you feel you must take one (side note - you may be better to walk down a few blocks to an earlier stop because they are mobbed by tourists and you may not get on as every car is already full). There was free wifi throughout as well, and it worked very good. Our room was on the back side of the hotel and we didn't hear any outside noise.

We spent three nights in Hotel Rex, San Francisco near the end of September 2012. It was the first stop in our Californian Honeymoon, and it really set the standard for the rest of the trip.
All the staff we encountered were genuinely friendly, helpful and couldn't do enough for us. A special mention has to go to Jay at the front desk who went the extra mile to make our stay memorable.
The hotel is in a great location for exploring the city, only two blocks from Union Square, with the famous tram line running at the end of the street. We couldn't have asked for a better location.
The room was comfortable, spacious and quiet, providing all the ammenities we required for our stay. We enjoyed breakfast in the hotel library each morning. An array of fresh delights were on offer, from scrambled eggs and bacon to pastries, cereal, fresh fruit, yogurts and the most delicious french toast.
San Francisco is a great city, and Hotel Rex compliments it perfectly.

Checking out today after a lovely 3 night stay at the Hotel Rex, a real gem in the heart of San Francisco. It's really close to Union Square. Check in was quick, friendly and helpful. Hotel is quirky, individual, comfortable and a lovely change from the usual 'sameness' of rooms in the big chain hotels. We asked for a quiet room away from the road beforehand and that's exactly what they gave us. Room 505 was very comfortable. My only gripe - no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. However, the Library Bar serves complimentary tea and coffee in the morning until 10am and there is a nice buffet breakfast available for $15. Oh and the resident lobby dog, Max the pug, is absolutely adorable! Even has his very own facebook page.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the road and it will be much quieter. Check out is 12 o'clock which is...

Joie de Vivre (similar to Kimpton Hotels) seems to specialize in older, vintage hotels that most people would characterize as "quaint" or "charming". Usually in my experience that means smaller properties and rooms that may not be up-to-date technologically compared to modern hotels (i.e. plumbing, heating/cooling, even room decor). As long as you know that going in and prefer or like those kinds of properties, you should enjoy staying here.

The hotel is located a few blocks west of Union Square so it is close to the action for tourists and if you want to get to shopping (the Westfield Mall is about a 20 minute walk south) and dining (although not that close to the North Beach or Mission Districts where the "action" seems to be now). The check-in desk was not as friendly or welcoming as I had expected especially since this was my first time staying here and I had booked a package and wanted to know what/how to redeem the extras (I was never offered this information).

There is a small "living room" next to the check-in desk that is an all purpose room serving as lounge, bar and dining room. You can get a free drink of wine from 5-6pm (I believe almost every day) so that was a nice touch.

The room I received was really small----disappointing since it cost over $220/night. The bathroom was old but manageable and it was okay for the one night I stayed but not sure I could "spread out" if staying more days than that. Unfortunately, the most annoying/disappointing thing was that there was no air conditioning, fan or other means of cooling off the room except for opening a window (which backed out onto the noisy alley below). I mistakenly thought that the room temperature dial control in the room also worked for cooling but unfortunately it was the heating and only made the room more unbearable during what was a hot day (and night).

The morning breakfast was a buffet----nothing spectacular or that appealing about it and judging by the other 2 people there, not popular. I believe that you can get coffee for free at the bar as part of your stay. Because of the unbearable heat in my room, I couldn't wait to get out of there. Of course, when I checked out I was prepared to tell them my experience but didn't get the chance as the clerk couldn't seem bothered to do more than check me out and never once inquired how my stay was. Apparently, they must have a cadre of regulars who frequent the hotel so they don't need my return business.

What a wonderful stay! Quaint hotel right where you want to be as far as location. Staff was friendly and helpful, cozy bar downstairs. Comfy rooms and beds, and room service was tasty! Not sure what else to say, kind of an ideal experience. Would recommend to anyone, and would definitely stay again!
