Owner description: This electric neighborhood of 100,000 people is not to be missed, and it's not hard to find: listen for the clack of mahjongg tiles and nose out the salty spicy squid.

As we were only in San Francisco we did a one day walking whistle stop tour to capture the sights and ended up spending a fair amount of time in China town. China town boast as being one of the largest outside of Asia and one of the oldest in USA. Don't know about the oldest or largest but it certainly covers a lot of blocks with thriving Chinese community and lots of interesting establishments and plenty of exciting places to explore and eat in.
It is a colourful lively place and you can easily spend a whole day exploring all the streets. it is very close to the center being just of Union Square and all the big name shops.
Definitely a place you would want to visit and a day well spent, if you have a day to spare.

Obviously a visit to San Francisco can not without visiting Chinatown. Chinatown is within walking distance of Union Square so can be easily visited.

Is Chinatown beautiful? No: a bit run-down, narrow sidewalks, cluttered shops. But the atmosphere is unique, the stores have strange and often beautiful items and the restaurants are unsightly but superior in taste. So just go visit it.

Loved, love ChinaTown in SF. Warm and wonderful streets with life that makes the trip worth it all. Ask questions, bargain, find wonderful fun gifts and things that make you smile.
Found so many great deals and views that I went back several times in our short stay.
Ate a great meal at a small place off the main path, and loved every minute there.
So fun!

Visited with my family during spring break. I agree that the merchandise is cheaper here than down by the Pier 39 area. Don't buy anything until you have been in a few stores. There is a substantial price difference in the merchandise from store to store. Check things out first and buy just before you leave.

There is a cute little place to sample different tea's. Nice, clean, and enjoyable.

Downside, the public bathrooms in Chinatown are worse than horrible. May want to bring depends. So nasty!!!
