Owner description: This electric neighborhood of 100,000 people is not to be missed, and it's not hard to find: listen for the clack of mahjongg tiles and nose out the salty spicy squid.

We booked a walking tour that I would definitely recommend to someone who hasn't been here. It gives the history behind Chinatown and the behind the scenes version of Chinatown. You are much more welcome in Chinatown as well. Definitely go up a few blocks and go to where the locals shop...it is amazing.

SO many people! I got to see drummers that all wore red and danced in the middle of the street around fireworks! I went to a little tea shop and got instruction and info about herbs and teas. So amazing. Many restaurants and shops to buy traditional foods. just Neat!

If you just want to say you went to Chinatown go thru the gate at Grant Ave and walk a little. If you want to see the real Chinatown you have to venture further, like Washington and Stockholm. When you get to an area where nobody speaks English you are there! What are you looking for? long beans, chicken feet, stuff you have no idea how to cook if you could eat it or tacky souvenirs from China? Find a place that serves food with no English menu, look around, point to what you want and enjoy China..

This was a fun place to just knock around going in the shops to look at all the fun wares. We didn't eat there, but I saw all kinds of options. It's not a far walk from Union square. If your looking for a unique gift this would be a good place to look.

Honestly I'm not sure what the hype is about this particular Chinatown. It was overpriced, felt pretty trashy, and wasn't a very good cultural experience to me. I like New York's Chinatown better.
