Owner description: This electric neighborhood of 100,000 people is not to be missed, and it's not hard to find: listen for the clack of mahjongg tiles and nose out the salty spicy squid.

San Francisco Chinatown is listed in all the guidebooks. Why? I have no idea. It's a very, very busy area of San Francisco with a bunch of souvenir shops and small restaurants. I personally like it because the food is relatively cheap. I'd definitely recommend walking through really quick as it's definitely a unique part of San Francisco.

My husband and I enjoyed walking up one side of the street, then down the other while window shopping. We had time to stop along the way and enjoy some really authentic Chinese cuisine, not the ones we are used to back home.

Same ole same ole. As far as Chinatown's go this one was uninspiring and drab. Nothing peaked our interest here as it was sub-par with other Chinatown's I have seen. Lacking art and cleanliness as well as only a small sampling of authentic Chinese restaurants left me disappointed.

Very disappointed with the area. Lots of overpriced "junk" and not much else to offer. Stopped at restaurant/bar for an afternoon drink and almost had to beg for service.

Its a must see for visitors to San Francisco, but we found China town a little disappointing, we expected a miniature china in the heart of San Francisco, but unfortunately found this to be part tourist trap and part Chinese food market.
Grant St was the overtly tourist section with shops selling souvenirs and other tourist tat. Venture off this street in search of the 'real China town' though and you end up in a maze of Chinese vegetable and food shops full of locals shopping for food.
Apparently this area is one of the most densely populated areas of the city with many people in very small apartments, many don't have fridges or large larders so need to shop every day for fresh food.
As a result the streets are very busy, and whilst its fun to see all the strange and unusual foodstuffs for sale its makes progress a little hard through the crowds.
