Owner description: This electric neighborhood of 100,000 people is not to be missed, and it's not hard to find: listen for the clack of mahjongg tiles and nose out the salty spicy squid.

If you do one thing while you are in San Francisco, you must visit Chinatown. It's an explosion of colors, sites, sounds, and smells. They are many restuarants, a zillion little shops, and it's worth it to spend some time just walking up and down the streets.

We took a day to visit this area and it was well worth the time. I took hundreds of photos of the stores for use in my camera club. The stores seem to carry the same things but some of the food items were very unusual. We had lunch at one of the restaurants and didn't know what we were ordering. We received some vegetable dishes and rice. It was ok, but not what we were use to eating. It was an experience and almost a geography lesson.

go to The Imperial Gardens on Washington - best food I have had. Order the bowl of War Wonton - this is truly a meal in itself. Service is excellent and the people are fantastic!!

I actually really enjoyed our time in Chinatown. We took the trolley there from near the Ferry building and when we got off some street performers were playing some music that really made you feel transplanted to Chinatown. A lot of tourist shops on the main drag, but also some authentic groceries and restaurants to be found nearby. I recommend looking at this self guided walking tour: http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/city-guides/san-francisco-walking-tour-1/. Very interesting walk that will help give shape to your walk around. Also if you have time, stop somewhere for Dim Sum (Chinese brunch) or at a bakery for some cool foods.

Chinatown feels like you have left the US altogether. Walk to any side street, look up at laundry hanging from windows, take in the sights and smells. This place is as authentic as it gets. Unique shopping and food too!
