if you're going to San Fran, be sure to go to Alcatraz. We had to buy tickets 2 days before as it sells out quickly. Amazing tour.......great boat ride, and so interesting. I hope they fix it just so more people can see it...it's deteriorating quickly. What a life they must have had...guards living with their families on the island. Tour is basically self-regulated, but be sure to get the headset, and follow it.

The bay is beautiful with views of the bridges, skyscrapers, hills and islands.
The only issue was the mist which blew in from the ocean.
When the mist came in it was very cool.
But the views were great.

Overall the bay was very interesting. The weather was extremely unpredictable one minute I walked in a t-shirt, the next I was wearing a wind proof coat. Fisherman's Wharf was most appealing down near the seafood restaurants, where live crabs were being thrown into boiling water and used in the crab and shrimp sandwiches. The clam Chower soup was fascinating, a sour dough roll contained the soup and it didnt leak out of the roll as expected.
I thought the pier was average apart from a few sprinkled decent restaurants e.g the crab house. Seeing the seals on Pier 39 was a bonus, although only a few were sitting out on the quays.
The best way to see the bay is to catch the F trams or the tour buses.

San Francisco's two biggest attractions are on the bay. The Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. So if you're a tourist, you will come here by default. There are lots of shops and piers to visit if that's your fancy (along Fisherman's wharf & the Embarcadero)

My personal highlight aside from the bridge and the island, is watching the Tram turnaround at the end of Hyde St.

Pier 39 is a very busy, crowed area. Keep together. The fun is everywhere. We took the Bay Cruise that took us out under the Golden Gate Bridge, and around Alcatraz. The tour is about 1 hour long. You have a beautiful view of San Francisco. The boat takes you under the bridge and out a bit into the Pacific ocean. A very relaxing trip, nice way to get off your feet for a bit. Your picture is taken before you get on the boat, and you have the option to buy it if you want to after your boat trip. Food is everywhere. We ate hot dogs, cottencandy, drank coffee, and looked at seals resting on some decks. An added bonus was a huge cruise liner was in the docking area, so we got to see it leave. Great stores to shop at, nice places to eat, Though you have to like fish...Most meals are that.
