There are some nice views on this hill. It is very easy with bus 39 from pier 39 to go up, and walk down seeing all others struggle to go up.

We walked up the Filbert Steps to Telegraph Hill to tour Coit Tower. The walk alone is worth the experience with tropical lush plants and secluded rest spots. The highlight of the walk up was seeing the wild parrots feasting on cherry tree blossoms. It was an amazing experience to be so close to the parrots while white petals rained down on us while we took their pictures. Make sure to take water and a snack, the stairs are steep (as is every hill in SF!). The views from Telegraph Hill and the base of the tower are phenomenal and the view from the tower is even better! It is worth the $7.00 admission fee. It was a bit disappointing to find plexi glass covering the window openings, but the open air top was nice. The Depression Era murals within Coit Tower were a nice surprise.

I look at Telegraph Hill as the "Alcatraz" neighbourhood of San Francisco. Perched atop a hill that rises 285 feet above sea level, its isolation from the rest of the city (in part due to the significant number of stairs you have to climb to get there) gives it a very unique feel. There are many "streets" which are little more than steep pathways which wind up and down the hill. The homes are small, narrow and almost cottage-like but they have views to die for and much privacy (no cars and not many people on foot). The best way to approach Telegraph Hill is from the north taking the stairs that rise up from Greenwich Street just south of Sansome (the Levi Strauss company head quarters - and store - are located here). The steps are not for the faint of heart - they are numerous and very steep - but they do quickly take you into the serenity of the Telegraph Hill neighbourhood. There are wooden walkways that criss-cross Filbert Street (as the path is known as) and at times the trees and vegetation form a canopy over the walkway. You eventually emerge near Coit Tower. Definitely take the time to explore this unique neighbourhood.

Visit Coit Tower,a tribute to City Firemen. Murals painted as a Depression WPA tpe project. The surround ing neighborhood slopes down to North Beach, and the Filbert Street Setps pass century old small house and a lush streetscape
