The botanical garden is in Golden Gate Park, and we paid $7 to get in. It is large enough to spend several hours there, which could be spent walking around, or relaxing. There was plenty of open space to have a picnic. I did not see a guided tour booklet, and the signs only listed the name of the plant you were looking at, so there wasn't a lot of context, but it was beautiful nonetheless. Occasionally you'll hear an airplane or see some cell phone towers on a nearby hill, but otherwise, you can't even tell you're in a big city. The entrance is right near the edge of Golden Gate Park, so it is very convenient to get to. We had no problem taking public transportation there.
