Totally free and very convenient to two of the different cable car lines. There are old cable cars, the story of the fight to save the system, the earthquake and an interesting film about the invention of the system.

Best of all, you get to see the machinery working right there in front of you.

You only need a short stop here, maybe half an hour to 45 minutes but it's well worth it.

Make the quick stop and check it out. Doesn't take long...it's FREE and is a cool bit of history.

After lunch we walked to the free cable car museum. I loved this museum. Even though the CA cable car line was not working while we were here, it was fun to watch the other continuously moving cables. There is a lot of information about the history, the almost demise and the operation of the cable cars. There is a nice little gift shop
and bathrooms in the building also. Although it is a little out of the way, it is a worthwhile visit.

This small museum is good for a short visit. The museum has an old cable car on display as well as displays explaining how the cable-cars work and the history behind the system. One of main attractions here is however the fact that it is located just abive the actual machine room for the cable cars. And one gets an excellent view of the machinery. The drawback is that this makes the museum somewhat noisy. There is a gift shop but no refreshments.

A typical visit probably just lasts 15-30 minutes but you can not beat the price (free).

Take either of the cable cars from the Wharf area (Powell-Mason or Powell-Hyde) to the Cable Car Museum for a short visit (15 minutes, but worth it) and then walk a couple of blocks to Chinatown.

Cable car ride is excellent - up and down the hills. Museum is free and interesting and it's an easy walk to Chinatown.

Buy your souvenirs in Chinatown - very cheap and same things you'll see at the Wharf or Pier 39 for significantly less.
