This museum is a must see for anyone who wonders how the cable cars work. It is informative and you can actually see the gears and cables (not the correct terminology, I know) work. This museum is free but they do accept donations. The kids loved it and I have to admit the adults were also impressed with what is involved in making these cars run. Worth the visit!

My 9yo son and I took the cable car from Fisherman's Wharf to the museum. This was amazing. Besides all the history, and photo opportunities. The real inner workings of the cable car system is right there. This was very interesting. Worth a 30 minute stop over.

The museum is free, small and does not have lots to see. If you are interested in how the cable car works it is more than worth a visit. You will not spend more than 20 minutes there.
The most interesting thing: The actual working motors that pull ALL the trains in the city, and the pulleys in the basement.
But only a handful of other props are showed, including the oldest car in existence and samples of cable and gear. We were expecting more of this museum including better diagrams/models of how the cars work.

I used to "commute to work" on the Hyde Street Cable car to my job downtown near Union Square. Some mornings the car would stop at the "Car Barn" and they would change the grip. That always made me nervous. Obviously the Gripman did not like something on the grip they were changing out. It's really old technology. Wooden Blocks for brakes, sand tossed down on the wetter days for added friction. The Car Barn is still there because that is where the powerhouse is for the system. Located at Washington/Mason streets sits the cable car barn and powerhouse, the museum deck overlooks the huge engines and winding wheels that pull the cables. Downstairs is a viewing area of the large sheaves and cable line as it enters the building through the cable channel under the street. They have a gift shop too.

This is worth seeing you will see how the cable cars work and they work out of this building. The tour is free and it shows the old San Francisco and has all kinds of old antiques.
