Owner description: Since 1873, cable cars have run up and down the hilly city, though after the 1950s, these cars have been kept in operation more out of historic nostalgia. Seventeen miles of track remain and have been deemed a historical landmark.

I was so glad that I read TripAdvisor before going to San Francisco. A good tip that I saw was that you can get a pass ( I think good for bus as well as cable car) at Walgreens. We asked at our hotel about the pass and were directed to the 24 hour Walgreens a couple of blocks from the cable car turnaround. We got 3 day passes ( I think each ride is $6 so it is worth it) and walked to the cable car turnaround near Union Square. When my husband saw the line he wasn't sure about getting in it, but it went quickly and it is entertaining to watch the cable car attendants manually turn the car. We rode the car the entire distance to the other end of the line and got off at the turnaround by Fisherman's Wharf. After walking around and having a great dinner at the Fisherman's Grotto, we went back and took the cable car on the return -- this time getting off at the block by our hotel. With our pass we did not have to pay each time we got on. Next day on a tour the guide said that if you get on the cable car a few blocks away from the turnarounds there is no line, and since the cars come right along if you wait for a few minutes a car should come along with fewer people on it allowing for room to sit down. He also recommended taking the California line if you just want a pleasant ride to a nice neighborhood, not so touristy. We did that ride after breakfast on the morning that we left taking the main line to California and getting off, and then crossing the street to pick up the California car. This car did not turn around the same way but because there were not many people on board the driver and attendant chatted and described what they were doing. It was a nice finish to our trip to San Francisco.

My daughter and I just came back from a 10 day visit to SF and we were lucky enough to get to ride the cable cars several times each day! It was thrilling riding them down hills while hanging on the outside. So much fun and one of the things we enjoyed the most during our visit. Most of drivers were very friendly, nice and helpful. It never got old riding them. *Tips* They are less crowded in the early morning and later in the evening. The waiting line at the turnarounds during the day can be 1-2 hrs long. Cost is $6 per person each way so buying daily passes are a better deal.

After our visit to Fisherman's Wharf we walked a few blocks to catch the cable car so that we can say that we rode a cable car. When we got there, there was a huge line and we waited like an hour to even get on one. When we did get one the cable car everyone was piled on and the drivers were just sitting there its like hello we are waiting. When we finally started going the drivers are kind of crazy like there was this one car that was slightly over the track and the driver get ringing the bell and yelling at the person to move out of the way. There were also a few people crossing the street that I was thinking that we were going to hit but thankfully the driver stopped and the people were able to finish crossing the street. It was fun but beware the drivers are kind of crazy, which is understandable for they deal with tourists all day and that may make me drive crazy too. Haha just kidding :)

It was a great experience to ride the cable car in SF. You can easily take in the sights of the different areas, architecture, etc. we'd definitely do it again when we come back.

The best way to see different neighbourhoods of San Francisco is on the cable cars. It was really good fun to go up and down the steep hills and a ride to remember.
