I was so glad that I read TripAdvisor before going to San Francisco. A good tip that I saw was that you can get a pass ( I think good for bus as well as cable car) at Walgreens. We asked at our hotel about the pass and were directed to the 24 hour Walgreens a couple of blocks from the cable car turnaround. We got 3 day passes ( I think each ride is $6 so it is worth it) and walked to the cable car turnaround near Union Square. When my husband saw the line he wasn't sure about getting in it, but it went quickly and it is entertaining to watch the cable car attendants manually turn the car. We rode the car the entire distance to the other end of the line and got off at the turnaround by Fisherman's Wharf. After walking around and having a great dinner at the Fisherman's Grotto, we went back and took the cable car on the return -- this time getting off at the block by our hotel. With our pass we did not have to pay each time we got on. Next day on a tour the guide said that if you get on the cable car a few blocks away from the turnarounds there is no line, and since the cars come right along if you wait for a few minutes a car should come along with fewer people on it allowing for room to sit down. He also recommended taking the California line if you just want a pleasant ride to a nice neighborhood, not so touristy. We did that ride after breakfast on the morning that we left taking the main line to California and getting off, and then crossing the street to pick up the California car. This car did not turn around the same way but because there were not many people on board the driver and attendant chatted and described what they were doing. It was a nice finish to our trip to San Francisco.
