Owner description: Since 1873, cable cars have run up and down the hilly city, though after the 1950s, these cars have been kept in operation more out of historic nostalgia. Seventeen miles of track remain and have been deemed a historical landmark.

If these don't sum up SF I don't know what does.

There is no other number one thing to do in SF.

Make sure you take on the free cable car museum too and get the MUNI pass as otherwise the cars are too expensive for more than just a one off trip.

Take the California line for a less busy experience evn if all you do is ride there and back again.

We bought the 3 day pass for $23/each instead of $6/ride. We ended up riding four times over a three day period. Very easy to get on/off although sometimes a little crowded. No SF visit is complete without riding at least once!

You simply have to do this. Period. It has always been a dream of mines since watching movies like The Princess Diaries and reading books like The Joy Luck Club. It only cost 8 bucks and the cable car from Union Square carries you basically through all major must-dos in San Fran (Lombard and the famous zigzag, Chinatown, etc.). I honestly accidentally came across the zig zag when trying to light a spliff lol.

This is a must do. Remember that this is a means of transportation, not a ride. During the off season, more use it as transportation. During the busy times and peak season, it's full of tourist. They do get packed so plan some time to either wait or use a bus to get back to were you started. It costs $6 one way. We used it during our off season stay in San Fran as transportation. We bought a week pass for $29 each and we rode it at least 4 times a day. 4x$6x7 = 168, so we got a great deal. We also used these same passes to transfer from the cable cars to bus lines to go to all the attractions. What a way to travel.

I liked the way they turn the cars for the next ride. The route is selected such that you have a nice view and a great feel of the city.
