Owner description: Since 1873, cable cars have run up and down the hilly city, though after the 1950s, these cars have been kept in operation more out of historic nostalgia. Seventeen miles of track remain and have been deemed a historical landmark.

“A SF must do!”
Reviewed April 24, 2013 via mobile

I took the cable car a couple times from powell down to the wharf. Everyone should do this at least one time. Prices for when I visited was $6 one way or $13 for all day pass. I was a little confused for people who just hopped on at stops along the way and didnt show a receipt or pay any fare? But they made sure to collect our money when we got on at the main turn about stops.

NOTE-if you are in a hurry to get from Wharf to Powell St-beware-time can vary! On two different days they were having problems with the cable system and there were significant time delays where we sat in the street for 30 mins plus till I decided to get off and walk back toward union square.

“Get on at the next block!!”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

We waited an hour...like morons...on a Saturday... In front of Ghiradelli square...with REALLY BAD street musicians playing nearby. Then, after boarding the cable car, we pause at the next block (in front of Buena Vista cafe) to pick up 6 more people that wanted to get on there! The ONLY people waiting there. Oh! If we had only known!

“A must do!”

We user the cable cars to get from our hotel to union square numerous times. Its fun and entertaining taking in lots of famous sites and roads along the way! Be sure to take your camera with you. Only down side is they get prity busy and crowded!

“Worth riding it”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

It is fun to ride the cable car and go back in time when this was the method of transportation. Make sure you get in line early since the line gets long.

“Still useful too”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

We were staying in Fisherman's Wharf area, and bought the day pass. We hopped on and off several times as we made our way around downtown, in addition to using the trollies, and never needed our car. The cable cars themselves are still a great experience--try to sit where you can see the operator use the levers. My teenagers enjoyed their first experience very much.
