Owner description: Since 1873, cable cars have run up and down the hilly city, though after the 1950s, these cars have been kept in operation more out of historic nostalgia. Seventeen miles of track remain and have been deemed a historical landmark.

Enjoyed the cable car rides - what ancient technology and fun personalities! The levers and pedals to do the cable grabbing and braking were fascinating. And the fact they allowed people to hang onto the outside was incredible with today's safety standards.

Along with the Golden Gate Bridge [separate review], nothing is as iconic in San Francisco as the cable cars. There are several different lines of these 150 year old cable cars, built to deal with trying to transport people up the ridiculously steep hills of San Francisco.

While the Powell-Hyde ride is a little longer, the Powell-Mason line is usually easier to get on, particularly from the end closest to Fisherman's Wharf, as it is a few blocks away, and not in plain sight like the Powell-Mason turntable. Make sure you hang on tight, as this is a last vestige of being able to just hop on, and grab on to public transit, with no seat belts or anything else holding you in but your own two hands.

You can't visit SF without riding a cable car, yes it's a bit pricey for a one way short ride $6.00 but it's a one time thing for sure. Was definatley neat experience, just hop on the cable car, pay your admission and enjoy the ride. I sat right beside the driver and didn't realize how much work is involved to drive one of these cars, very cool as SF's cable car system is the world's last manually operated system.

Buy the all day ticket and ride!!! You can ride the buses and cable cars, etc...great value! Yes we rode it from end to end! Loved stopping in Union Square and I rode on the front, hanging on right down what I call "rice a ron" hill.... You could feel the temperature drop 10 degrees from the top to the bottom! Loved it!!!

At first, we were not going to travel by the cable car as we were only in SF for the day, so didn't think it was worth the money....but....it so is!! It's great fun and is extremely practical to get to the 'main' areas of SF town. Loved it!
