Owner description: Since 1873, cable cars have run up and down the hilly city, though after the 1950s, these cars have been kept in operation more out of historic nostalgia. Seventeen miles of track remain and have been deemed a historical landmark.

“Unique experience”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

I heard that this is the only cable car anywhere in the world and the only mobile national monument. Whatever it is, I would strongly recommend, that if you go to SF, then at least ride this cable car for a unique and amazing experience. We took the Hyde & Beach train from Powell St BART station. You will feel the thrill when the car goes through the steep uphill and then descend. Hats off to the drivers, who are known as gripman. One point to note that, you can buy a one-ride (no transfer) ticket in 6$ or buy a full day pass in 14$.

“Waited in line, never got to the front”
Reviewed October 4, 2012 via mobile

We spent a lot of time trying to ride this, but the lines were hours long and did not seem to move. If you try it, alloe several hours to wait.

“Depending on your ride, you may have a little wait, but ... MUST DO.”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

In this day and age of wearing seat belts in Taxis, etc. it is rare you get an authentic experience like this. If you are up for it, sit on the outside or simply hang off the side. Super fun anachronism.

“Touch of old world charm and a great way to get up the hills”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

The charm of these cable cars is something else. You can ride up the hills and down to the whalf during day or night. The sight from the top of Lombard St at night is something else.

“Muni Pass”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

Buy the Muni Pass. I bought mine at a CVS...Not all CVS stores have them though. I got the 3 day pass and was still able to use it for 4 days. You just flash it at them, and they don't really check it. Don't go to crowded stops. You can just flag one down at various points....much easier than waiting around. The F train was probably the most convenient for getting to the Pier and Coit Tower. i used cable cars to get to Chinatown and North Beach.
