Ghirardelli square is in a nice area of san Francisco but doesn't have a lot to offer but restaurants and the factory store. there is no actual factory working there or any history left besides the old brick building. at the factory store you can get the same chocolates you can get at any grocery store, and not even cheaper so there is not really any reason to buy here. they have a chocolate festival every year around august which is fun. the waterfront and the beach is great! the only beach in san Francisco that really has send and water access. parking is a problem so I advise parking few block back around fort mason and walk for 5 minutes.
