Bus 39 takes you from a block from the Fisherman's Wharf to the Coit Tower. We took a more challenging route, walking up the hill from Pier 33 (Alcatraz Pier) via the Greenwich Street. I lost count but it has to be more than 300 stairs. It was worth it though as you will pass by lots of nice houses build on the hill side.

Parking space is limited and may be hard to find on a busy day so if you are driving, try going early.

It costs $7 to go up the tower. The line up to the elevator can be long but since the tower is not that high, the elevator takes passengers up in about every 5 minutes. The elevator was a little cramped but who cares, it's only a 1 minute ride!!!

The 360 view was spectacular. My favourite views are that of the Alcatraz, Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, and Downtown SF. I was not able to find the Lombard Street as there are no signs and no staff to help once you are up on the tower.

The safety glass at each of the viewing window makes taking great photos rather difficult.

It was a bit out of the way of the main sights so we caught a taxi up to the tower, which was the best idea. The murals were not available for viewing unfortunately. We found the entry signs for tickets confusing but the short trip in the manned lift was worth it for the 360 degree views, including Lombard Street curves! Enjoyed the walk down the north side steps to Napier Lane, a boarded walk alongside attractive gardens and homes built on the hillside.

Our tour bus didn't tell us that there's an easier way to the tower, so we turned right where they told us and.... Holy cow! What a tall mountain. Si steep that the cars can't park parallel to the street, they have to park at 90 degree angles. We got over half way up and a very nice gentleman told us how to get back down without so much of a hassle. We appreciated this because my mom was pushing a walker! She's such a trooper and I am SO PROUD OF HER!!

Anyway, once we got all the way up, it was $7 for a ticket to the top of the tower. And more stairs. Though there is an elevator that saves you a whole 3 stories.

But the view was so worth it all. Absolutely amazing 360 views of the city. And we came back down the way the sweet gentleman explained and it was such a nicer walk.

Would I do it again? Probably.

The views from the top are amazing, if a little restricted by all the safety installations. The ride up in the lift is a tad cramped but the reward certainly makes up for the discomfort. The sweeping views of San Francisco and the Bay Area are breathtaking and you get an amazing perspective of the Hilly City.
