Bus 39 takes you from a block from the Fisherman's Wharf to the Coit Tower. We took a more challenging route, walking up the hill from Pier 33 (Alcatraz Pier) via the Greenwich Street. I lost count but it has to be more than 300 stairs. It was worth it though as you will pass by lots of nice houses build on the hill side.
Parking space is limited and may be hard to find on a busy day so if you are driving, try going early.
It costs $7 to go up the tower. The line up to the elevator can be long but since the tower is not that high, the elevator takes passengers up in about every 5 minutes. The elevator was a little cramped but who cares, it's only a 1 minute ride!!!
The 360 view was spectacular. My favourite views are that of the Alcatraz, Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, and Downtown SF. I was not able to find the Lombard Street as there are no signs and no staff to help once you are up on the tower.
The safety glass at each of the viewing window makes taking great photos rather difficult.
