This was one of the highlights from my stay in San Francisco. A must see attraction for all ages. I'm a child of the 80s and grew up in arcades. Just seeing some of those games again brought back memories. I'm also a history buff so seeing all of the very old penny arcade attractions was amazing. I've never seen such a collection anywhere. It's really a must see (and free admission) if you are anywhere near Fisherman's Wharf!

I love to bring visitors here. There is no admission charge to walk through and admire but if you wish to personally operate any of these lovely old machines they require small amounts of cash (usually 25-cents or 50-cents) and there are ample change machines distributed throughout the arcade. The former small gift store appears to have been replaced by a vending machine near the entrance which continues to sell popular mementos at reasonable prices. My personal favorites here are the photo booths (at least 3 varieties), the player pianos, the big musical boxes (songs from which can be purchased on CDs at the vending machine near the door) and the mutoscopes (single-viewer flip card "movies.")

As a local, it can be fun walking around the Wharf experiencing the sights and sounds. Musee Mecanique ranks up there as one of the fun places to visit as a kid. It's especially nice to see many arcade machines are still in working order for the new generation to experience.

When I was a child my father took me to the Sutro Museum near the Cliff House, it was an eccentric collection of Victorian memorabilia made by Adolph Sutro, an early San Francisco tycoon. The collection was dominated with all manner of mechanical entertainments such as a coin operated violin, player piano, miniature amusement park and much more. There were mutascopes (early flip card displays that predate the movies) and every imaginable kind of coin operated amusement. They also had Tom Thumb the circus midgets furniture, Egyptian mummies and a complete replica of an amusement park made from toothpicks by a convict at San Quintin. Some of the collection is now at the Musee Mechanique and this is where I go when I want to show friends what that part of my childhood was like. I am never disappointed.

Great old antique automatons and mechanical-game amusements. Needs a bit of a facelift, but great carnival-style history and some hands-on fun.
