Owner description: A shopper's paradise, this bustling square near the theater district has everything from upscale department stores and boutiques to discount houses. After a $25-million facelift in 2002, the cosmopolitan hub boasts a huge amphitheater, granite pedestals on which street entertainers perform and a tree and flower-lined environment in which to enjoy an espresso or an elegant meal.

For a major city, San Francisco should boast more than the tourist trap called Union Square. It was shockingly small when visited in person, with a reasonable sized garden in the center, expensive stores around the square and a lot of crowds from nearly hotels. If you have been to Yonge and Dundas square in Toronto, you have already seen Union Square. Dont expect too much and you shall not be disappointed. The Westfield Mall is a short walk away, but please do not expect to be blown away with that institution too. San Francisco just does not have the space to build expansive awe inspiring malls, or perhaps we have gotten too used to large ones and dont really care for their smaller cousins.

“would not return”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

the actual square was quite nice but the area was full of beggars, there was group of young people letting everyone know that all Americans were going to die in the holly war. cops were dragging a guy off the ground and arresting him. restaurants were not next to the square they were in surrounding blocks. it was fine during the day time plenty of big name shops in the area, cable car but people yelled and screamed till really late in the night. our hotel was right on the square.

“Great for Shopping”
Reviewed June 22, 2013

Union Square is very nice for shopping and eating. There's Macys, Saks, and Bloomingdales for everything in between. Square itself was clean but nothing exciting...a coffee shop there. Area was a bit dodgy at night and recommend to walk during the daytime.
