Owner description: A shopper's paradise, this bustling square near the theater district has everything from upscale department stores and boutiques to discount houses. After a $25-million facelift in 2002, the cosmopolitan hub boasts a huge amphitheater, granite pedestals on which street entertainers perform and a tree and flower-lined environment in which to enjoy an espresso or an elegant meal.

“Shop till you drop!”

Stayed right beside Union Square at the Hilton in January and was a very nice area to walk around. The square had a skating rink set up and nice atmosphere to hang out and have a coffee. There are plenty of shops for all budgets, tons of name brands from upscale to bargain shoppers. Plenty of restaurants to choose from in the area as well. Good way to spend an afternoon.

There are some shady areas near Union Square so be prepared for quite a few panhandlers and homeless people.

Although there is an important shopping area, pay attention and walk by yourself, especially in the evening,. There are many homeless people, some of them really crazy who would anything for a few dollars...

“It's just shops”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013

If you like shops, Union Square is good. If you don't like people and crowds, Union Square is bad.

Felt a bit Christmassy when we visited in February - cold weather and people rushing around. Coming in from Australia, we stocked up on clothes from Macy's, Levi's and other shops around the square and in the Westfield style plaza round the corner.

Accessible by public transport from anywhere, and tram too.

“Shopping&Dinning in Union square area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2013 via mobile

There are a lot of namebrand merchaizes surround this area. Same product can be sold at different price from different shops so look around different shops before buying.. A lot of good restuarants in this area as well. We went to The Cheesecake Factory on 8th floor of Macy. Really good.

“A Little of Everything”

First time in SF and we stayed in the Downtown/Union Square area. I didn't know what to expect because I heard how expensive this area was but in the end I thought they had a little of everything. They had Gucci, LV, Saks etc for the upscale shoppers then Ross, Old Navy, Marshall's for the shoppers on a budget and even Gap, H&M, Macy's and DSW for the middle shoppers. They was also plenty to eat and live street entertainment. We enjoyed the atmosphere. Plenty of walking so wear comfortable shoes. Also, the stores now charge you $.10 cent per bag because the city is going green so we bought a large strong shopping bag from Macy's for $1 and reused it over and over.
