Permanent galleries are very strong on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean art. We were disappointed in the weakness of the Southeast Asian collection. Definitely worth a visit.

The Asian, located right in Civic Center, always has very interesting beautiful exhibits, the current one is especially worth visiting. With exquisite jade work, extremely fine metal work decorating wood and pottery pieces, paintings and beautiful calligraphy on display in four galleries, it's one of the best exhibits I've seen there in years. The Emperor's Treasure items on display are on loan from the National Palace Museum in Taipai. This exhibit ends September 18.
There is plenty of parking in the neighborhood, underground parking in a huge underground garage across the street under Civic Center and another parking garage about a block north on Larkin Street. It's easily accessible from BART too, just get off at Civic Center Station and walk a block north, you'll see it facing the east end of the plaza. Special exhibit pricing: Adults $25.00, students and kids $15, add $5.00 for weekends, under 12 free and SFUSD students free. Regular admission: $15 and $10 for us seniors and kids. The cafe in the museum is cafeteria style and the food is quite good. Check their website if planning a visit to this fabulous collection (or the next one) asianart.org You can get your tickets on-line. If you're local, a membership is a good investment in a year's worth of great exhibits and invitations to openings.

This place is great value. No crowds, beautiful artwork from all eras: ancient to modern. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And the location is great for seeing city hall, the opera house, symphony, library, all beautiful public architecture.

I love this museum. My wife and I are members and go to most of the shows. Besides the traveling exhibits, some of the items in the permanent collection are fabulous. My favorite of all is the Rhinoceros. Ask anyone where you can see the rhinoceros and they will direct you to the right place in the Chinese part of the museum. I always wonder what the artist was thinking when he made this piece, as it is unlike anything else from that period. Besides, I wonder where he saw a rhino in the first place. He must have been well traveled.

Some other not to be missed items: the baskets near the Tea House exhibit, and the Contemplation niche.

The restaurant serves a nice lunch. We usually plan our visit around noon.

The museum is easy to reach via BART (Civic Center), and there is a parking garage across the street with usually has some open spaces.

Highly recommended for residents and visitors to the Bay Area.
