My experience was less than ideal and it was my own fault. We walked miles from our hotel to the museum - so we were tired and hungry when we began. There's a lot to see here -- and they give you free headphones and cassettes to hear greater detail about some of the exhibits. One of ours was broken -- be certain to check before you head into the museum portion. It was $15 each which is a little pricey for what we saw - but it clearly was a good collection.

Be very careful in the area around the museum. We actually saw a drug deal right outside the museum. We came in from the back side of the building --- there were quite a few homeless people, others clearly impaired and the area needed to be hosed down. Yuck.

“It's good.”

They have some pretty good exhibits here. You can learn a lot about a foreign culture through the expression of works of art. The Asian Art Museum puts on some pretty good exhibits. If you enjoy museums and art galleries, then perhaps you have developed an eye for examining what you are looking at, that is what makes museums particularly fun, catching the patterns within a multitude of contexts.

“A Surprising Hidden Gem.”
Reviewed June 9, 2014

Before I visited this museum I was a little apprehensive that
it might be dull but far from it. Although the original building is
not yet a century old it's also had an upgrade. There are some
amazing detailed pieces from all over Asia, colourful porcelain, metal work, ivory figures, jadework and well presented. However
refreshments wise it was restaurant only and the menu was
strictly various Asian cuisines, regardless of your taste in art it is not necessarily to everyone's taste in food. Disappointed that there wasn't a coffee/ soft drinks facility, always welcome after viewing such an excellent collection. The gift shop sold artefacts but no postcards of the exhibits which seems shortsighted
from a revenue generating perspective as well as tourist appeal.

“Highly Recommended”

This is the kind of museum that Europeans like me don't see often - that alone would be a reason to visit it. You really do learn more about the art and cultures of so many Asian nations, all of them so diverse and interesting - Japan, India, China, Thailand and so on.
Plus, you can tell that they really made an effort to arrange and illustrate the objects and works of art so that they tell you the stories of those cultures, as well as telling you something about their spirituality: so that it is a great pleasure to walk in the quasi-zen simplicity of the Japanese rooms, and admire the richness and intricacies of mandala-shaped Nepal rooms...
Highly recommended.
