The Asian Art Museum is a place of refuge from the bustle of The City, as San Francisco prefers to be called. The special exhibits are well thought out. The terra cotta warriors show gave me more information and a closer in context view that I had when I visited the warriors at home in Xi'an. The guided tours are excellent. Special shout out to Virginia who took me through Korean dynasties last week. The food is the cage is among the best, if not the best museum food in town. I often eat here if I'm going to a concert or opera across the plaza.

What an amazing museum. I was fortunate enough to be in SF on the first Sunday of the month and the Asian Art Museum had
free admission. What a treat ! The museum is incredible, as it has a very large collection of Asian Art, the largest on the West Coast. There is so much to see. You need at least a full day to take in the wonderful collection. The museum personnel are very helpful and cordial. My suggestion is to take the escalator to the third floor and work you way down. The three floors of the museum is organized well and is family friendly. There is a great restaurant on the first floor serving light Asian food, so you can spend the entire day experiencing the wide collection of art. The large gift shop is filled with wonderful gifts for friends and family.
This was the highlight of my trip to San Francisco.

Often overlooked the museum has a great permanent collection as well as excellent shows - On the weekends they often do things like the New Years Bell Ringing with Japanese monks reading the wisdom sutra, A lion dance on Chinese new year and various interactive things for kids. It is big but not so big that you can not see most of it. Also, my favorite is to sit int the little quiet alcove just at the end of the Japanese area and look at the water in the black stone fountain (near the bridge). The restaurant was one of the first museums in SF with good food. Now that is pretty standard and it is not as good as cal academy or exploratoreum, but it is definitely acceptable check out their www.asiaart.org. we live in SF with young kids, but are members and enjoy it with them

Recently visited the Korean Joseon Exhibit and really enjoyed everything they had on display and the clever way they had the artifacts displayed. They had a very good mix of modern technology displays and the overall lay-out of the display was very easy and well spaced. I would go back again if I could and spend more time admiring the history.

This is the largest Asian art musueum in the U.S. and its really nice with beautiful statues and artifacts :-) it is definitely worth seeing :-) before or after seeing the museum you can eat at the cafe located on the first floor :-) the center section while mostly empty is quite impreesive in its architecture :-)
