I think everyone who visits San Francisco visits Pier 39 to see the sea lions sun bathing. It's an extraordinary (and amusing) site. If you're interested, you can go online and watch them on the webcam. If you have a sunny afternoon to walk around San Francisco, go to Pier 39. It's entertaining, plenty of food and you get a great view of Alcatraz.

Thank feld

Huge tourist stop with lots of shops and places to eat. Great views of the bay and sea lions warming themselves in the sun. Prices are higher and there are a million other places to stop/eat nearby, but it's worth at least a walk through.

Wish we'd had more time to spend! The seals were unbelievably entertaining, and there are so many places to eat and things to do! Views were stunning, and I will definitely go back!

Pier 39 has quite an array of shops and restaurants, although all are very touristy. As such, most things were expensive. We went twice, and each time, there was a wait at every restaurant we stopped at, and the pier was very busy in general. I did appreciate that all of the restaurant menus we viewed had a statement about only serving sustainably harvested fish, and even offered the Monterrey bay aquarium's Seafood Watch guide. A couple more unique things about Pier 39 are the resident sea lions that you can watch from the Pier, the large carousel at the end, and that they do free shows every night. There was a magician while we were there. Although it was a place we are glad we visited, it did not have any San Francisco culture, which we also wanted to experience. Public restrooms were hard to come by, and there was a long line, and they were very smelly. I would recommend using the restrooms of whatever restaurant you choose to eat at (although not all of them had restrooms)

I could have stayed here for a couple hours watching the sea lions. I live in nc mountains and we don't have these. Such a funny creature. They are totally oblivious to the crowds of people watching. It is a busy place. You just have to kinda wait your turn to get up close but it's very worth it. We went here after going to Alcatraz since it wasn't too far from there. The pier also has lots of restaurants and shopping. Tons of boats around if you are into that. Be sure you get some sour dough bread while you're here. We went early and parked all day in a lot across from Alcatraz. It was kind of expensive but considering the amount of walking we did I would have paid it again to be that close. If you are in San Francisco you gotta go here. The trolleys run in this area plus they have men peddling bike carriages if you want to be toted around.
