What a visit. From the ferry ride over let your imagination take you into the past. The audio tour is excellent you move through at your own pace pausing as necessary to soak in the atmosphere. The audio tour is staggered so there are never too many people in your way. The tour is brought to life with real people recounting their stories of working or being incarcerated on the island. You can see the mainland and think it would be easy to escape until you view it form golden gate and see the tides and currents.
The site between May to September has nesting birds so you cannot see all of the island . You may be lucky to see a visiting author who gives you expertise on their subject matter. Souvenirs abound!!! It was a fantastically clear day with the Americas cup sailing around the island who could ask for more !! We'll worth a visit . Book tickets well in advance as this was the second time of trying to visit. On line booking through official Alcatraz site was easy to use but don't forget to print off the actual tickets and not just the receipt. You may require ID too.
