Owner description: Park rangers conduct tours by recounting the prison's thrilling history along with intriguing anecdotes about Al Capone and other legendary figures that made a "home" here.

We went to Alcatraz on the 6:30pm night tour. Boarding began at 6:00 but we waited in line for a full 30 minutes to get of the boat. The ferry trip over to the island was nice, but with so many people on the boat at the same time, you couldn't see the sights well or get good pictures.

Once on the island, it takes another 15 minutes to get up to the main prison building and get your audio tour headset. The audio tour was very interesting and we enjoyed waking around the prison. However, there were really too many people in the building to have a good experience. Often there were 10 or more people in front of whatever the audio told you to look at. It was impossible to get any good pictures because of the crowds.

All that said, Alcatraz is something you should see. Perhaps book the earliest tours so that fewer people are on the island. Since there is not really a time limit, people from earlier tours accumulate throughout the day.

Really enjoyed our visit to Alcatraz. Make sure you book before travelling to San Francisco as it gets booked up a couple of weeks in advance at peak times. We booked our trip as part of the City Pass, which was excellent value. The audio tour of the cell block is a must. The kids enjoyed it too and it was fascinating way to spend a couple of hours.

Strangely fascinating...! We booked online with the official website, cost of $30 per person, we arrived half an hour early as requested for the ferry, all staff were very friendly and helpful, lots of props and interesting articles to read and see before boarding the boat so no chance of getting bored.! Once on the boat the views back to Sanfrancisco and forward to Alcatraz are just a 'feast' for your eyes, its hard to take it all in..(so long as its not foggy..!?) once on the island you are free to just wander at your own pace, the audio tour explains everything and its well worth taking your time and getting the most out of it, although a place for the most criminal of criminals it is a very enjoyable tour. I hope you all enjoy, and get as much out of it as we did ...

Make sure you book your tickets before you get to the City, I spoke to so many people that wanted tickets bt there were none. The Ferry trip is a great way of seeing the city from a different angle. This is the best audio tour I have ever done, so informative and brilliantly done(free) It makes your time on the island fly past. We did the last day tour of the day and the island was not to busy, I would love to go back and doing and evening tour.
