Yeah it's time consuming and a bit inconvenient, but it's a lot of fun. Anyone with a sense of history will appreciate the rock.

We did the first trip (9 :10am) of the morning out to Alcatraz. Take warm jacket as it can be a bit nippy. When we arrived on the island, which was on a Friday, they were offered a free 1 hour tour of the gardens. It happens on a Sunday as well. It starts at 9 :30am. The lovely tour lady was so informative and passionate about the gardens restoration. It was not only a garden restoration tour but they informed you about building and architecture from times gone by during the military and federal prison times. Something you would not have otherwise realised or seen on your walk around the place. The volunteers responsible for the garden restoration are passionate and hard working to get this island back to the way it had been years ago before it overgrew. After this tour we did the audio tour of the cell block which was very interesting and informative. You can not drink or eat on the island except drink your water.

First thing to know is that Embarkadero BART station is a long way from Pier 33, so you need to find a different way to get there ( I took the "F"tram from Market St).
The ferry journey is 10 mins, there is then a free audio tour which guides you around the prison, narrated by ex inmates and guards, it is very interesting to say the least. The tour lasts 45mins, that was pretty much all I did, I think there is probably more to see, but I didn't see it.
The night tours get booked up way in advance.

We did the evening tour, and it was simply amazing. The cold weather only added to the experience. The audio tour is very informative and should not be missed.

Alcatraz offers so much beyond the years as a prison with a history going back to the 1850's. With stories about the families that lived there and soldiers stationed on the island, the visit was so much more than expected. The stark nature of the cells brings to life the impact a sentence to prison must have on a person.
