Owner description: Park rangers conduct tours by recounting the prison's thrilling history along with intriguing anecdotes about Al Capone and other legendary figures that made a "home" here.

From joining the (slow) line to board to leaving the boat the whole experience was 1st class.

This has been very well thought out/developed experience and exceeded my expectations.

I thought it might be a little bit dull but there is plenty of variation on what's available to do on the island, from days prior to the prison all the way through to the Indian occupation (which I knew nothing about !)

Value for money was decent too.

Would definately recommend.

If you dont book at least a couple weeks in advance, you will have a hard time getting tickets. So be prepared. Also, try the night tour.

AlcatrazCruises.com is the only place you can go to get tickets to physically get onto the island, and they sell out quickly, and days/weeks ahead of time. I screwed up by forgetting to book our Alcatraz tour before going on vacation, but caught a major break by getting tickets (thank you to whomever canceled) the second day we were there.

Overall, the island was outstanding - especially the audio tour. Hearing about the history of the prison from actual guards and inmates really does take you back in time, which added to the experience of visiting.

You can only eat at the dock, so make sure you have a good meal before wandering out on your own, because you WILL spend hours on the island checking out all of its nooks and crannies.

When walking the cell blocks, it is very eerie to realize who lived here and the events that took place. I consider this a must-see if you're in SF. Reserve tix early- we had actually wanted a nighttime tour, but it was sold out. Beautiful panorama of SF skyline.

The tour sells out days sometimes a week in advance, so book early so you aren't disappointed and miss seeing this must see attraction. I loved the audio tour. To be able to hear an actual guard tell you about the prison and to have some of the prisoners tell of their experiences really sets the atmosphere. You can take your time, absorb the the stories and wander around the island at your own pace.
