“Bar Harbor's Best View and Best Value”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

We've been vacationing in Acadia and Bar Harbor for many years, so many times at the Bar Harbor Inn that we think of one of its many second floor rooms with view of the habor and islands as "ours." There are lower priced places in town, but you won't have the view or the first class service. Having a good breakfast included in the room charge ( and available till 11 am) and being able to stroll to everything in town without driving or parking headaches is a real value fo us.

Room Tip: Most rooms have spectacular views, but second floor seems more so and a bit more private.

A welcoming staff, a fabulous breakfast buffet, well appointed rooms and breathtaking ocean views make this an ideal vacation hotel for anyone planning to visit Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. It is a bit pricey but worth every cent. We have stayed at this hotel more than ten times in the last fifteen years! Each visit has left us relaxed and wishing we could spend more time.

Room Tip: Stay in the Lodge at this hotel.

We went up for a "Spring Fling" package. It included two nights in the Inn two breakfasts and one dinner; it also included either a harbor cruise or a National Park Tour. The Hotel reception, the ambiance, the room, dining, service and the bar were all excellent and the location is perfect. Our only disappointment was that although the package was supposed to include a harbor cruise we were informed that the cruises had not yet started for the year. But we could take Olly's Trolley Ride around the National Park. When we climbed on said trolly our guide told us that due to the National Park choosing to cut back things people would notice the Park was closed due to the Sequester!! However, Olly did run his trolley around the non Park Roads and was able to drive up to the top of Cadillac Mountain. All in all we very much enjoyed our trip but thought that claiming to include a cruise before the cruise ships were available was deceptive advertising.

Room Tip: I am told the lower level rooms in peak season can be less quiet due to people walking along the coa...

We had the best location in the place with an ocean view that was amazing. Unfortunately, the room was outdated and didn't feel very clean. There was a dead dried bunch of flowers on the table outside of our room during our whole stay. My husband is sensitive to mold & dust and spent the 2 nights maxed out on allergy meds to keep his throat and nose clear. We travel quite a bit for business and pleasure. If location is worth the cost, you'd get a nicer room in downtown Manhattan with your $400. Maintenance does not seem to be a priority here.

Of all the very good choices in Bar Harbor, the Bar Harbor Inn & Spa is most likely the best. Situated at the "end" of downtown, on the harbor (you can get your feet wet just steps from your room!) with several acres of property/gardens it's a "must see" at least once in your life! We splurged ($$$) for a "loft suite", and was well worth it. Very interesting layout: entry was on the second floor of the hotel into a large living room (w/sleeper sofa and large bath) and sitting area, with a garden view, and the upstairs loft (third/top floor) was a large king bedroom (with bath) and balcony facing the opposite direction -- the harbor! (Spent many hours on the balcony just watching the pier, harbor, people, etc.)

Barely made time to visit the impressive Acadia National Park right next door. Though having its own grounds, the BHI is literally right next to the "downtown" main street with many shops. Would take longer to get in the car and find a parking spot than to just walk the few hundred yards. Make sure to take a couple days to enjoy and your camera.

Restaurant also has gorgeous views and excellent food/service. And did I mention the hot/fresh chocolate chip cookies at tea time (4:00pm)??

Room Tip: While the garden view rooms are nice/pleasant, you really should spend the extra $$ to have a harbor...

My first time in Maine, great lobsters everywhere! Lobster pounds alone made the trip worth it. the hotel itself is set nicely on the water and convenient to the main shopping street. The rooms are not very expensive and that probably explains the cheap feeling of the place. The furnishings, carpets, beds, bathroom fixtures all felt very cheap. uncomfortably so. Nothing wrong with the hotel I just wish they had spent more on decor.

I highly recommend bringing bikes and riding the carriage paths at eagle lake. Also acadia national park is absolutely stunning.

The inn is located on the coast and the center of town is a short walk. Fortunately my first impression mellowed through the course of my stay. Check-in was less than stellar as the clerk’s attitude left me with the impression she was doing me a favor fulfilling my reservation. The young woman is a credible candidate for a semester at charm school.
Room 310 was a first level oceanfront accommodation priced at $374.43 inclusive of taxes. The room was furnished with two queen beds, night stands, dresser, mini refrigerator with flat panel TV on top, table with two chairs, a large living room chair with accompanying ottoman. The room did not have a desk. The furniture actually overwhelmed the space. You could not open the door to the balcony without having to move the ottoman out of the way. Electrical outlets were scarce. TV reception and internet connectivity were inconsistent throughout my stay. The balcony was furnished with two chairs and a convenience table. A small closet housed a personal safe. The bathroom had a single vanity sink and shower over tub configuration. A complete range of Gilchrist and Soames toiletries was provided. A second level room is probably the better choice or you will have to live with the noise from your upstairs neighbors.
The inn’s common area includes a large reception room with fireplace and a small gift shop. Computer work stations are located in the reception room and coffee/tea service along with cookies is provided through the day. The grounds and gardens are beautifully landscaped and well maintained. The inn fronts the shoreline path which meanders along the Bar Harbor coastline.
A complete continental breakfast buffet is included in the rate and served in the lobby of the Oceanfront Lodge. The fare includes fresh fruit, pastries, breads, hard boiled eggs, cereals, and a range of hot and cold breakfast beverages.
The inn has two dining venues. The Terrace Grille is an al fresco setting and you are at the mercy of the weather. The Reading Room is the inn’s prime dining venue. Three evening meals consisting of an aperitif, two appetizers and a glass of the featured white wine averaged $62.50 inclusive of taxes and gratuity. Entrees ranged in price from $28.00 to $39.00. The menu is varied and the food very well prepared. The evening meal is accompanied by a pianist. The Reading Room’s host is well versed in the local lore and most anxious to share it with you.
Acadia National Park is a short drive from the inn.
