“Best for harbor and ocean views and sounds if you get the right room!”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Upon arrival at the Bar Harbor Inn we were quite disappointed with our "loft" room, which was not really described as being "different" from the other loft rooms when booked online. I had even called a few days before our arrival asking about the room and how it was laid out to be sure we would have a beautiful view of the harbor from the third floor. We were "told" our loft room consisted of a double bed on the second floor, along with a sofa bed and bathroom with a jetted tub, overlooking the gardens and the 3rd floor loft room was to have a queen size bed, bathroom, and balcony overlooking the harbor. Room 223 is NOT that !!!!!! Coming into the room on the second floor of the main inn is a 3/4 bathroom with a stand up shower, toilet and sink off a small hallway like area. There, is also a small refrigerator and a stairway leading to the third floor. The third floor has a double bed with a balcony facing the harbor and no bathroom. The view is very restricted due to the room being right next to where the Reading Room Restaurant sticks out. They did attempt to appease us by offering us a different room ( Rm 208 - a loft room!) for 2 of the 5 nights we had booked at a discounted rate and a gave us complimentary meal at the Reading Room. The "second" loft room had a beautiful FULL view of the harbor and pier and was a room like we had expected in the first place.
Now.. once we settled down....room 223 was really fine for the two of us, but it does not have a great view of the harbor. The farther you get away from the restaurant..the better the view would be. Room 223 would be just fine if you didn't think the "whole" harbor view was that important and you only needed only one queen bed.
I just think the inexperienced travelers should know that room 223 IS different than the other loft rooms....and when booking rooms online, you need to really watch the descriptions that are given because the rooms are not the same. Room 223 IS described as such when booking the room, but not knowing is was "different" than the other rooms I had already heard about, I really didnt put two and two together. I thought that all the lofts were described that way.
Anyway, the continental breakfast was very good with all the pastries, breads, fresh fruits, bagels, hard boiled eggs, cereals both hot and cold, fruit juices, coffee, tea and milk. The manager of the breakfast area was very nice and helpul. You do have to go to the ocean front Lodge building for the breakfast but you get a beautiful view of the ocean while eating a wonderful breakfast! Not bad!
All in all, the location makes the hotel. The room was clean but the beds and pillows were not at all comfortable, and the rooms seem quite outdated. The staff at the desk were friendly enough and the cleaning staff we encountered were very pleasant. The door greeter/valet person was also very pleasant and quite friendly. The restaurant though.... was not a comfortable place for the two of us but the food was good!
We would definitely stay there again, but mostly for the location.

Room Tip: Watch the descriptions for the rooms because the room may be different than what you think it should...

Our first visit to the Bar Harbor Inn left us with a wonderful experience. The proximity to the downtown area is very convenient, and dismisses the need to deal with the downtown traffic. Our Oceanfront Lodge room offers a view of Frenchmans Bay that you won't likely forget. While room location is magnificient, the interior furnishings seemed dated, and not what I considered for this price point. However, the room was spotless, and the cleaning staff was helpful and courteous. Continential breakfast was quite good, even better when you can bring it back to your deck overlooking the bay. Our dinner at The Reading Room was exceptional and it's staff should be commended for service and quality. I forsee another visit to this fine facility in the near future.

Having stayed in all three buildings at the hotel, our favorite is the ocean front lodge. It gives us the peacefulness at the end of a busy day exploring our favorite spots. There are people walking along the shore path, but it is still very private on the balconies. That said, and let me repeat, we love this hotel and will never stay anywhere else in Bar Harbor, the ocean front lodge, taken out of its location, is nothing more than a motel anywhere else. So there are some amenities that could be improved, like the room itself. Decor is very outdated, chairs are uncomfortable, toiletries provided are very low end and there is NO, repeat, NO water pressure. They took away the daily delivery of newspapers, which my husband greatly missed, took away the English muffins at continental breakfast, which my husband greatly missed, and no more fluffy comforters. And let me address the breakfast...it has decreased over the years. There are pastries but at any given time, fruit was sparse. We found ourselves eating elsewhere. Being repeat visitors of the hotel, we can see what it was once to what it is now, and it would be nice to add things of comfort and not take away. All the "complaints" are easily overlooked once you are checked in....now get rid of the cruise ships and we have the old Bar Harbor back that we so loved for many years!

The Autumn package for 4 days was fabulous! Incredible views of the harbor, beautiful landscaping, outstanding balcony, room was small but charming (the only cliche was a malfunctioning heating unit in the room.) The service and food in the Reading Room were excellent with great presentation and quality. We loved the pianist and nostalgic songs! In addition, we were able to enjoy breakfast in the comfort of our room overlooking Frenchman bay! The entire facility was very clean and the staff considerate and friendly. We are hoping to return in the Spring with friends. We would like to thank the entire staff for an outstanding vacation!

This inn is everything you want in an inn. The packages are outstanding and the food at the inn is absolutely delicious. We had visited last fall and booked the Autumn package. The room, meals, tour and store credit was all included including the taxes and tips for this one price! The place is centrally located in the Harbour with great views. Be sure to pack for the cold though, the weather up there changes very quickly! It's a great romantic escape! Can't wait to revisit

Room Tip: all rooms are great whether you choose the inn or the bay views. Personally, I like to stay inside t...

I recently spent 2 nights at Bar Harbor Inn, the 4th hotel of 5 on my recent hiking tour of coastal Maine.

Bar Harbor Inn is situated on Frenchman Bay near the heart of downtown Bar Harbor. The property consists of 8 acres of lush lawns and gardens with 3 styles of guest room buildings:

-The Main Inn has 50 guest room and suites, many with fireplaces and balconies;
-The Oceanfront Lodge has 64 rooms, all with ocean views; and
-The Newport building has 38 non-view rooms.

All rooms and suites have either 1 king or 2 queen beds.

The Main Inn houses the lobby and gift shop. The full service Reading Room Restaurant and bar, and the Terrace Grill are also located here. Oceanfront Lodge and Newport guests have an included continental breakfast or you can dine on their own dime in the Main Inn.

A separate building adjacent to the swimming pool houses the Spa.

The hotel's web site is full of room and amenity descriptions in text, photo and video, so I won't repeat all of that here.

My 2 nights here were in room # 404, a second story, 2 queen bed room in the Oceanfront Lodge. The Lodge is a large, 2-story, motel-style building along the waterfront.

My room was quiet and comfortable, and I slept good here. I was with a small group and did not make my own reservations but I would have preferred a 1 king bed room as it would have given more floor space.

The room was well appointed and nice for sure, but nothing extraordinary except for a large and very comfortable leather club chair and ottoman. You don't run into this in most places.

All rooms in the Oceanfront Lodge have ocean views. And they all have private covered balconies, but they are furnished with cheap plastic outdoor furniture.

The included continental breakfast is served in a small room in the center ground level of the Lodge. As far as continental breakfasts go it was pretty good but the room can get very crowded (64 rooms full of hungry people) so it can be quite noisy and hard to move around. There are also a few (very few) tables outdoors on a covered patio.

I did not dine here during my stay, choosing instead to try some of the smaller local restaurants for my evening meals. I found 2 real gems - Eden and Havana, both very good and I would go so far as to rate Eden as excellent but it is not for everybody as it is vegan.

If I were staying at Bar Harbor Inn again I believe I would opt instead for a king room in the Newport building, a less expensive way to enjoy all that Bar Harbor Inn has to offer.

Room Tip: Try the less expensive rooms in the Newport building if you can live without an ocean view from your...
