“Loved Meeting All the Guests!”
Reviewed September 28, 2006

This was our first trip to Bar Harbor, Maine. We chose the Thornhedge Inn because it is located almost right in the center of town. The inn has plenty of parking so we were able to walk to the restaurants, shops, whale watch tour, etc. The inn staff is very eager to be helpful so we had excellent advice on what to do, where to eat and anything else we had questions about. It is an historic home, Victorian style. We liked the fact that we had access to most all the main living rooms. Fortunately, these rooms hadn't been converted to guest rooms so there was a feeling of being in a home. The wine and cheese every evening on the large front porch was attended by most of the guests. We really enjoyed meeting and getting to know people from all over the United States and Europe. The rooms on the second floor are great for a romantic feel. The third floor rooms seemed better for younger folks as they were less expensive and had a good number of steps to climb to get to them. There were also some rooms under the main living level, but we didn't have a chance to see them. The full breakfast served in the main dining room was really, very good and another place to interact with the other guests. If you want a fancy, brand new accommodation, don't come here. If you want a fun, friendly homelike atmosphere, this is the place to stay.

  • Liked — Friendly and service-oriented.
  • Disliked — No breakfast before 8 am.
  • Tips/Secrets — For romance, reserve any room on the second floor.

We had a wonderful 2 night stay at this Inn. We found the gorgeous inn walking by and were lucky to get reservations during the high season for $120 per night (late Aug, near Labor day). We stayed in the Blair Eryie (Master Suite) which Bobby (the owner?) claimed that Paul Newman and Joanne Woodwood stayed their often as their daughtered attended The College of the Atlantic nearby. The room was large and comfortable (albeit a bit over the top in decor, but that seems to be the style of the inn). Room was quiet, warm, comfortable, with decent bedding and a full fireplace. Full gourmet breakfasts were made each morning. Guests would have a choice of two yummy options. For example: one day the choice for breakfast was between Lemon poppyseed waffles and crab quiche. The location is PERFECT! Right near downtown Bar Harbor, so it is easy to walk around. Bobby helped us secure reservations for restaurants and was extremely helpful with her recommendations. We had a great find for dinner at McKay's!! Unbelievable food for moderate price. I highly recommended the Thornhedge Inn if you don't mind lots of flowered wallpaper, flowered furniture, lace canopies, and old-fashioned art. There is a charm to it--- but it is a bit tacky as well.

We needed a place to stay for the last 2 nights and there wasn't much but b&b's left in our price range, so we stayed here. We had to switch rooms after the first night, but they were both on upper levels which was good with us since they were quiet. The staff also moved our luggage for us, so we could just leave it behind when we went out for the day. The rooms were clean and comfy with chairs and old furniture. One room had an odd picture in it! We are not big on b&b's so the lack of hairdryer was unexpected, but they had some in storage downstairs when I went and asked. We were disappointed in the food and found the other guests to be close to retirement. The house was amazing and has been well cared for. One of the other guests discovered an old victrola that actually worked. The Thornhedge was close to the park where we caught the bus to the carriage roads, so it was close to shopping and food. Unfortunately, it was a little too close to the bus traffic for one of us. The proximity to traffic left us with having to place a towel in the bathroom window since there were no curtains. Also, parking was tight.

  • Liked — the house itself
  • Disliked — the traffic noise

Twenty-seven years ago, my parents took my wife and I to stay at the Thornhedge Inn. Since we've been living in England all these years, we haven't been able to get back until this summer. The same owner, Elinor, was there to greet us on the porch of this beautiful Queen Anne style home built in 1899. There was an assortment of friendly people from different countries and states having wine and cheese on the large front porch when we arrived. One of the guests serenaded us all on his guitar with a number of terrific songs he had written himself. The wonderful blueberry muffins we remembered from our first stay are still every bit as good all these years later and new entries like crabmeat quiche, made in the inn's kitchen, are first rate. Elinor's collections of antiques, dolls, books and buttons (dating back several hundred years) make this Victorian home a very special place indeed. We are so glad we came back!

  • Liked — The historical collections and interesting people
  • Disliked — Although our bathroom had a shower, it did not have a bathtub.
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for any room on the second floor.

My wife and I had been travelling to B & B's for several years, but had hesitated to take our teenage daughters with us. This year, for our summer vacation in Bar Harbor, we decided to take our daughters with us and stay in a B & B. We booked two rooms at Thornhedge -- one had two beds for the girls and the other had one queen bed for us. Once we parked the car at the inn, the girls were off walking everywhere in town "doing their thing" while my wife and I took several tours and went hiking. Staying at an inn in the heart of town is a great way to have your teenagers with you on vacation and at the same time letting them be independent. The inn staff were very nice to the girls and they (we) really appreciated it!

  • Liked — The in town location with lots of parking.
  • Disliked — The shower was a little small.
  • Tips/Secrets — Book two rooms if you have teenagers. Don't try to make do with everyone in one room.

This is most of all a friendly inn. By the time my husband and I left, we were hugging the staff and the other guests. It is a pretty Victorian inn with a large white porch and four living rooms on the main level beautifully appointed. We booked late and could not get one of the premium rooms, so we took a standard room. It was mediuim size with a queen bed, carpet, a small sofa and very clean. The price of the room, however, seemed fair since it was less than the premium rooms. We loved this inn for its ambience. There is a real welcoming feeling. The other guests are easy to meet and seem to enjoy meeting each other particularly at the afternoon wine and cheese. Come to this inn if you want to feel at home and comfortable in your surroundings. We sure did.

  • Liked — The main living areas of the inn are beautifully done with special touches

Fourteen years ago, we stayed at Thornedge on our honeymoon. We came this year to celebrate our anniversary. The same owner was on the porch to greet us (and the same Yorkshire Terrier too -- "Thorn"). There are still lots of interesting people to meet and great conversations on the porch. The owner's daughter-in-law, Anne, and helper Sharon are cooking full breakfasts now instead of continental. Boy are they good! It's nice to know that some things stay the same.

  • Liked — Casual and warm atmosphere.
  • Disliked — No elevator to third floor.
  • Tips/Secrets — Our favorite room is Blair Eyrie.
