They say that Burning Tree is in Bar Harbor, but it is not in the town. it is about 15 minutes away in a little town called Otter Creek. Well worth the drive though, as the food is very special.
This restaurant is excellent in every way except for the party of 8 seated next to us who were a loud bunch of yahoos with 5 empty wine bottles on the table - which explained a lot. ;-))
It is a small place. We were seated in a corner, which we love. The ambiance was hip, casual, elegant and trendy. The place was packed. But all the wondrous restaurants we have been to in and around Bar Harbor have been very full. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and didn't rush us. We felt that he really loved his job as he did it very well.
We started out with crab, shrimp and scallop fritters served with chili aioli dressing. Just delicious. Then my husband had mixed green salad with Tahini Ginger dressing, and I had a Roman salad which was frizee, endive and goat cheese. Also very tasty. For our entrees, I had the house special which was filet of sole with heirloom tomatoes and crabmeat on top of a corn, white wine and cream sauce. The vegetable was beets with red onion and a vinaigrette - cold. The perfect accent to a perfect dish. My husband had perfectly cooked salmon on top of spicy baked beans. There was a hot coleslaw on top of the salmon that he said was awesome, and the red bliss potatoes rounded out his delectable dinner.
This is another restaurant not to be missed. Reservations a must unless you go early.

We skipped dessert, opting to go back to our West Street Hotel and have free cookies and brownies. Mouthwatering as always.

This was my 4th visit to the Burning Tree and go every time I am in Bar Harbor. It is pure joy....always. It is unassuming from the outside but please note their expansive gardens where they grow many of the vegetables and herbs used in the restaurant. The service is wonderful and friendly without being obtrusive. The food is just wonderful and perfectly cooked. We started with the raw salad.....paper thin slices of 2 different beets and turnips served with a perfect lemon basil vinaigrette and slices of Parmesan cheese. Beautiful and delicious! Then we had the monk fish served in a chili glaze. It was perfectly cooked and presented with the most delicious eggplant I've ever had. We had an amazing cup of coffee (decaf from Rooster Brothers coffee in Ellsworth....the best decaf ever) and pumpkin chocolate cheesecake for dessert. They have a very nice wine list with unusual wines by the glass. I had a glass of a Gruener Veltliner from Austria (quite hard to find in the US) and very much appreciate by me!
So give yourself a real treat and enjoy this fabulous restaurant! You won't regret it!

This is a dinner you treat yourself to once and a while. We eat here once a year when we are in town, and have for many years. Consistently good food, service and atmosphere. Elegant surroundings, first class all the way.
We arrived just before our reservation time and were warmly greeted and seated immediately. The server went over the evenings specials and asked if we wanted a pre dinner cocktail, which was properly mixed and served. At just the right moment our server returned to take our order and go over the specials again.
I had my Burning Tree 'usual' scallops dinner which was cooked perfectly with delicious side vegetables. Mrs. B had the 'fish of the day' fresh swordfish which came out perfectly cooked to her request.
Make reservations!!!or you will be disappointed when you get there. The Burning Tree is always busy and, this time of year, is closed Monday and Tuesday. It is not expensive, as, you get what you pay for. Exceptional food always costs more and, in this case, worth every dollar.

My husband and I ate dinner during our recent vacation in Bar Harbor. We asked some locals what restaurants they would recommend, and Burning Tree was consistently on the top of their lists, so we figured we had to give it a try.

SERVICE: We called ahead to get a reservation for 8 pm on a Wednesday, and were a few minutes early. We were asked to wait in the lounge / seating area near the hostess stand, and were offered a drink menu. We were seated at our table after about 10 or 15 minutes, and service all evening was attentive and friendly.

FOOD: The food we enjoyed was very, very tasty. We started with seafood fritters, followed by entrees of bouillabaisse and pan roasted chicken, clams & chorizo. The presentation of all the dishes was memorable - care was taken to place rosemary leaves decoratively on on my pieces of potatoes in my stew, which was artfully arranged. When was the last time a stew arrived at your table that had been arranged? For dessert, we shared a pots de cremme, which was very good as well.

ATMOSPHERE: The decor is a rustic, quaint interior, with the dining room broken down into several smaller rooms, with probably 4 or 5 tables each. This really lends to an intimate dining experience which is great for a date night or special occasion.

VALUE: Our meal cost us about $100, which we thought was pretty reasonable. A nice night out.

All in all, this place was very good. It's located outside of the main town of Bar Harbor, so you will need a car (or cab?) to reach it, but its worth the effort. Make reservations (it was even busy on a Wednesday night) and go!

I've been to the Burning Tree many times, and it is by far the best cuisine on MDI. The food is incredible and delicious. The chef's creations are imaginative and creative with the unexpected combinations of flavors. The seafood is almost always perfectly cooked, and their wide selection of dishes are all fantastic. The ingredients, as well as the flavors are all local, and the restaurant fits the island's personality perfectly. Anybody visiting the island who wants a great dinner, albeit a bit pricy, should come to the Tree. You won't regret it.
