“Very nice with excellent location”
Reviewed July 10, 2014 via mobile

We stayed at Bar Harbor Manor during July 4th weekend. The room was nice, clean, and very quiet. It was so quiet, in fact, that we didn't hear the remnants of Hurricane Arthur come in overnight! More importantly, the Manor didn't lose power, although apparently many other hotels and resorts did! (We went to three different restaurants for breakfast on July 5 before we found one that had power and could serve.) The location is excellent and within easy walking distance of downtown. (I strongly urge you to walk as much as possible because parking is difficult to find.) We would stay here again.

The Hotel was very nice. Clean room and friendly staff. Only complaint would be that they could use a new mattress on the bed in the room we stayed in. It was close to everything we were there to do. Overall a good value and nice place to stay.

We stayed in this hotel over the July 4th Holiday and it was beautiful. The room was very clean (we stayed in the building across from the lobby), there was plenty of space and the carpet looked as if it was recently put in. The guy at the desk was helpful in telling us where we should eat and the location was in a good walking distance to the harbor. The hotel was tucked away enough that there was not a lot of traffic and there was just enough parking even though every room was taken. The little deck with access from our room was a great bonus. the matress was comfortable. I would book this hotel again if I ever return to Bar Harbor without a doubt

We chose the Bar Harbor Manor because we don't really like BnBs, didn't want a chain motel or a very pricey resort and the BHM is none of those.
Located on a quiet side street, it's a nice walk into town and a quick drive to Acadia. There's a huge Hannafords around the corner; perfect for picking up some wine, water, etc.
We were underwhelmed by the greeting we received upon check in and the clerk was not at all helpful in answering our questions about local restaurants other than to point to a book of menus. She also did not tell us about the lovely outdoor lawn area with chairs around the side of our room, which we discovered right before we left. Our room was a suite without a balcony, so it would have been nice to know this spot was there before we left.
The room was fine. It's nice to have an extra place when one of us has work to do and the other wants to sleep. My suggestion, though, the 2 sitting chairs are not comfortable and a love seat might be a bit more inviting. The decor did remind me of an assisted living facility, as was mentioned in other reviews, but everything was spotless and seemed pretty new. TV reception was fuzzy, but the wifi was strong and included.
The hotel does not provide breakfast, nor were we given any suggestions about where to go. I think some info should be given on check in about nearby breakfast choices. Coffee and tea in the lobby is there all day; maybe some cookies could be added in the afternoon, too.
Otherwise, it's a good place for the value and we would recommend it.

Didn't think I'd like this hotel since it's older and we had actual keys to lock/unlock the door...when you've only stayed in hotels with card slots which electronically lock/unlock your room door, this was a shock. But, the place is very nice and "stuck in time" in a good way. I didn't feel like I was visiting my grandma's house although most of the residents could have been my granny.

The front desk guy was awesome and very helpful. No scripts to read off and fake smiles to accompany their "enjoy your stay!" It was all authentically nice here.

Close to all the restaurants, tours, bike rental, etc that we did that weekend. On a small quiet street away from the late night bars. I have no complaints.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. Downtown Bar Harbor is wall-to-wall hotels of all shapes and sizes. The Bar Harbor Manor fits somewhere between a chain establishment and a cozy inn.

Let's go over the GOOD and the BAD from my visit

GOOD
*Clean. The public areas and my guest room were very clean. The outside grounds meticulously maintained.
*Free Parking. Plenty of free parking for all guests.
*Great location, walking distance to the heart of downtown and an easy five-minute drive to Acadia National Park.
*Comfortable bed. We slept great.
*Private balcony. Our room was on the second floor and all rooms have private little balconies, very clean and with updated furniture.
*Appears Recently Renovated. The property seems very new, perhaps recently renovated.
* Nice big bathroom, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker.

BAD
*Decor Reminiscent of a Nursing Home. While the property is in great condition, and perhaps recently renovated, the decor, especially in the lobby of the building with most of the rooms was decorated in a style that reminded me of a nursing home -- all pastel colors and faux colonial decor under harsh industrial lighting.
*Terrible television reception. I expect that a hotel in 2014 will have a high def TV with an array of high def channels, but so many hotels provide a nice TV but don't spring for HD channels for their guests. This is one of those hotels.
*Questionable Security. It's been a long time since I checked into a hotel and was handed a metal key, not a security card. This raises some questions about room security as does the fact that the back door, off the parking lot, was open 24/7. This is not a good idea.
*Staff a Little Off-Putting. Upon check-in, the front desk clerk made some snide, mocking comments when we tried to ask about places to hike Acadia and restaurants. We certainly did not feel welcome at the hotel or in Bar Harbor. Reading the extremely defensive and accusatory responses to others who have left negative comments here on Trip Advisor, it seems that this type of disrespect for hotel guests is standard operating procedure for the Bar Harbor Manor.

The Bar Harbor Manor is glad these guests enjoyed their visit to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. While we are very happy to hear they enjoyed our wonderful location in downtown Bar Harbor, our meticulously maintained property and new bedding we are disappointed that this guest was not completely satisfied with all aspects of their recent stay with us. We’re sorry that this guest did not care for the décor of the corridors in the new Hotel. All decisions regarding décor are made in partnership with a professional hotel interior design firm. The owner and designers collaborated to achieve a relaxing, pleasant atmosphere in the corridors. Just this week the artwork for the hallways was installed consisting of rare hand-picked photographs of historic Bar Harbor from the late 1800’s. The hallways are not reminiscent of a nursing home and do not have faux colonial décor.
Providing high definition TV is a great idea and we have been looking into this for some time. In our remote area with limited providers it is cost prohibitive for a property of our size at this time. We will continue to monitor this and hopefully be able to provide HDTV in the near future.
The Bar Harbor Manor does not have questionable security. All public areas, including parking lots, exterior doorways and corridors have video surveillance monitored 24/7 for the safety and comfort of our guests. There has not been a single incident involving a guest’s security at our hotels in over twenty five years. We understand that this guest would prefer a plastic key card, however most of our guests find it charming when we hand them an actual key. Bar Harbor is one of the safest towns in the world. We are fortunate to live in a town where we sleep with our doors unlocked, windows open and the car key in the ignition. We are sensitive to our guests’ concerns for safety since they come from all corners of the world but we believe that since we live and work in Bar Harbor we are qualified to determine the level of security necessary. We wish this guest had brought their concerns regarding security to our attention while they were staying with us. I’m sure we could have put their mind at ease.
The hotel is disappointed that this guest did not feel that they received satisfactory reception at check in. The Bar Harbor Manor has an excellent front desk staff that is local and has a great appreciation for our beautiful island and enjoys sharing this with our guests. Clearly this did not come across to the guest at check in and we apologize. We will continue to work to improve our front desk performance. The Bar Harbor Manor disagrees with this guests’ opinion that disrespect for hotel guests is standard operating procedure. This could not be further from the truth. Ownership, management and staff treat all guests with the utmost respect. While we apologize that this guest did not feel welcome at check in, the Bar Harbor Manor’s responses to reviews are always respectful and fair and give us an opportunity to thank guests for their input and provide additional information. The Bar Harbor Manor Reservations Team often hears from guests that our responses are part of the reason they choose to stay with us.
Our property appreciates constructive suggestions from our guests and often implements them as they assist us in improving our property. The Bar Harbor Manor is very proud of our property and our hard working staff and always welcomes suggestions on how we can be of better service
