“Late Evening Arrival Surprise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

After driving four hours up through Maine we arrived at our Resort/Spa and just knew we didn't want to eat in their upscale but pretty predictable food. They actually recommended Galyn's which was right up the hill across the square. With some trepidation we read the menu and decided "what the heck". Well we were pleasantly surprised by both the attentive staff and the excellent food. I was pretty surprised because Bar Harbor located next to Acadia National Park is a cruise line destination but this restaurant seemed unaffected by the throngs of cruisers meandering through Bar Harbor buying T-shirts and ice cream (in late October?). So kudo's to Galyn's for really exceeding our expectations. We really enjoyed the meal the tourists had already gone back to the boat. We had the restaurant almost to our selves and this enhanced the experience. So you never can tell, sometimes the old hangout is really the best deal in town. It was for us. Don't know if they close for the season, but late October things start to shut down in Bar Harbor after the cruise lines leave. Try this restaurant some late evening for an unexpected treat.

“Great expectations, big disappointment”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2013 via mobile

I appreciate I am in Maine slightly out of season, but if a restaurant is open, it should be the same standard. The service was ok but stale, however the major problem was the food. The mushroom starter was watery and with no real flavour, then the sautéed lobster - not cooked well, served with a very bland rice and a piece of murdered broccoli. There is great lobster in Maine so this was very disappointing . I didn't give them a chance to do something as I just couldn't believe the chef would allow that to be served and to be frank I just wanted to leave..shame.

“Enjoyable meal”

We enjoyed our meal here. The staff were friendly and gave good service. The lighting was a little dim and made reading the menu a bit hard.

“Excellent lobster dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2013

We were looking for a nice, quiet place to have dinner in Bar Harbor, after a disappointing meal the previous night. I especially wanted to have a lobster while we were in Maine. After being beckoned in to the restaurant by a greeter outside the door, I was a bit apprehensive, but I shouldn't have been. I'm not sure if he was an owner or manager, but he certainly seemed to be in charge of inviting people in, and he was the right person for the job.
Galyn's offered us a lovely, quiet dinner in Bar Harbor. We didn't sit near the window above the street (which was fine with us - we weren't in the mood for people watching) and we enjoyed our dining experience immensely.
We each enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail (one wine, one a mixed drink), as well as the lobster bisque, which was delicious. For dinner, we both opted for the $19 whole lobster dinner, and this was a great place to have it! Not only do they provide the traditional lobster bib, but they also pre-cracked the lobsters for us in all the right places, so we basically just had to open it up and peel out the lobster meat - not as messy as I thought it might be. This is a great touch by the kitchen staff. We also had a chocolate dessert (may have been a special that night, or else the Ghirardelli chocolate on the menu) but whatever it was it was REALLY delicious.
I would say this was one of the nicest dinners we had not only in Bar Harbor, but during our 3 week New England vacation.
If you are looking for excellent food in a quiet, refined atmosphere, don't miss Galyn's in Bar Harbor! It will be #1 on our list, if we visit Bar Harbor again!!

“Great little place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2013

Nice place with great food. We eat early, and so we were among the first to wander in for dinner. We took a seat at the front of the restaurant on the second floor, overlooking the street outside - the window afforded us a view of the foot traffic on the street and in the park across the street - always changing, always interesting. Dinner was excellent, and our waitress was excellent! Try their blueberry desert - I'm not big on blueberries, but this was outstanding! My wife and I always like to try new places, but we would come back here.
