“A perfect walk to enjoy at LOW tide!”

make sure to check the tide charts! At low tide and 90 minutes before and after you can cross a sandy rock bar and then follow a path to an observation point. The view of Bar Harbor won't disappoint. All ages could enjoy this activity. Watching the little kids skipping stones on the water, building cairns from the stones made me vow to bring my grand kids along next time.

A fun thing to do in Bar Harbor is to walk on the sand bridge to Bar Island. Watch the tide schedule and then at low tide you will have enough time to walk across, check out the tide pools for critters and shells.

We walked out across bar island and ventured toward the pools of water. I had read about tide-pooling and wanted to check it out. After carefully turning over medium sized rocks and looking under seaweed, we found sea stars, snails, barnacles, small crabs, and many other interesting forms of life. Make sure you return everything back to the way you found it. Be careful though not to wade too far in the sandy water as it pulls you under like quick sand. We were a little too adventurous and got stuck. It was torture getting out as you had to run through what felt like broken glass as fast as you could so as not to sink in and get stuck again! Don't let that deter you from tide-pooling though, just make sure solid ground isn't more than a step or two away!!

What a special event that the ocean tide offers any guest. DO check the tides but enjoy the fun of approaching an island by foot at low tide when it is can only be reach by boat at high tide.

Off of West Street on 1 Bridge Street is the low tide attraction known as the Land Bridge or Sand Bar. It connects Bar Harbor to Bar Island. People do drive their vehicles onto the Sand Bar, but that's up to you as I have seen pictures of cars that were left unattended and become submerged. This is nice to do in the evening. Wear a light jacket just in case it gets cold. You can cross over and walk the one mile around Bar Island. This is great to do on a clear or foggy day. You see all sort of people, families and of course, dogs crossing the bridge. It's the thing to do at low tide in Bar Harbor.
