We arrived at West Street Hotel on July 5th after severe storms had hit the area. The hotel had been out of power since the morning, and it wasn't restored until around 10pm in the evening. There were no lights, no elevators, the room keys didn't function, etc. The staff tried very hard to keep everybody happy, carrying bags up to the rooms, letting people in and out of the rooms, etc., but the owners wouldn't allow them to offer the guests any sort of compensation for the trouble, and, being a peak weekend, the room rates were very high that day. I realize the weather and power outage wasn't the fault of the hotel, but a room upgrade, spa credit, or something along those lines would've went a long way towards customer satisfaction. The next morning when we were actually able to check in, they forgot to print us out a "parking permit", so we rec'd a letter on our car telling us we weren't allowed to park in the lot. Again, the staff apologized, but it was just another annoyance.

Hopefully, when you travel to MDI, you won't have severe weather, so you won't have any of the above issues! The experience of the next four days was much better. The common areas in the hotel are well designed, and the staff was very polite and helped as much as they possibly could in any situation. Even service in the pool area was great, which was surprising since the server likely had to go down five floors to access the bar/restaurant. The pool was pleasantly warm, the area was very clean, and the chairs were comfortable with options for chaise, umbrellas, tables, couches, etc. It was a beautiful view out over the docks and to the Porcupine Islands.

The rooms were very nice, with excellent linens, furnishings, and architectural touches i.e. a faux tray ceiling, etc. There was some water damage to the wood on the bathroom vanity, but it was just water, not dirt, residual soap, etc. The thermostat seemed to be limited to a minimum of 69 degrees (I prefer around 65 at night), and, while I would've just slept with the patio door open, the parking lot was somewhat noisy. I really liked that all the rooms had a patio, even those that did not have an ocean view. The kitchenette areas on each floor were one of the most ingenious ideas I've ever seen at a hotel. I'm sure it's easier for them to maintain, and it's much better coffee for the guests. There was always ample bottled water and fruit, and, although the cookies went fast, they were replenished several times every evening.

I think the location was the best possible, particularly for first-time travelers to the MDI. Great restaurants are nearby, it's just across the street from all the boat tours, etc. It's also close to the park for hiking. We didn't have any trouble with availability in the parking areas behind the hotel.

While I might explore another hotel for my next trip due to the annoyances of the first day, this hotel definitely has a lot going for it.

I cannot say enough about this hotel. We arrived early and the front desk upgraded our room at no additional cost to a harbor view. We liked the hotel so much that we decided to stay an extra night and the hotel accommodated us at our original reservation price. The decor of the hotel was absolutely beautiful and the entire hotel was exceptionally clean. There was a pantry that was stocked with coffee, hot chocolate, fruit, water, cookies and games for the kids. There was a Kid's Club offered at no additional cost as well. The location is also perfect. We will definitely stay here again and highly recommend the West Street Hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms with a view are worth the price.

A beautiful modern hotel, the most beautiful views and rooftop pool, definitely do not need a car for this location since all restaurants and bars at walking distance. An amazing service and very clean. If you are heading to Bar Harbor this is the spot to be in.

We are in hopes that if your travels bring you back to the Bar Harbor area the West Street Hotel will be the hotel of choice!

What a beautiful and well kept hotel. Walking into the lobby you certainly feel like what you've imagined a hotel in Maine should look like. Every detail in this hotel whispers Maine. The rooms were impeccable and the decor was done very tastefully. Cookies and coffee on every floor were my sons favorite. Complimentary laundry a plus. Location was perfect, right in heart of everything. Shopping and restaurants all within walking distance. Will definitely stay there again!!
